Ever encountered Damaged ZIP files? I am sure each and everyone of you has experienced getting an error like “Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive” when trying to open a Zip-compressed file. If you regularly download compressed files off the Internet, then you must have seen this error many times.

This error comes when the compressed file is damaged or corrupted. I have tried repairing such archives with the built in WinZip repair tool, but that has never helped me. DiskInternals ZIP Repair helps repair zip structure and extract the contents of a damage or corrupted archive.

A zip file is highly sensitive to corruptions. In case of even a minor corruption of the file structure standard zip tools will no be able to extract its content. This is because all zip tools check archives for integrity. If CRC values of the original files of an archive don’t match the extracted ones, the standard tools won’t extract them. In such a case DiskInternals ZIP Repair helps repair zip structure and extract the contents of the archive. Full automation of the recovery and a wizard-like interface make zip repair no more than a snap.

This free tool helps you extract as many files as possible from a damaged archive. It is a freeware tool. Just download it, unpack and install onto your computer.

First, i should say Im not a IT guy and I really don’t understand these IT terminologies that you gentlemen are discussion about. What i simply wanna share is that I’ve also encountered the same problem whilst extracting zip-files in Windows Vista. Eventually I manged to find the solution from Windows support and they asked me to follow these simple steps & IT REALLY WORKED!

    1. Find a zip file.
    2. Right click the file and choose “Open With”. If a sub-menu appears, please click “Choose Default Program…”
    3. Click “Browse…” button. Browse to “C:\Windows” folder.
    4. Find the file “explorer.exe” (it sometimes will show as “explorer”) and click “Open”.
    5. Make “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” selected and click “OK”.
