Update: Tools to detect & remove Downadup worm

Last week when I asked the question “Is Downadup, one of the deadliest worms ever?” some people in one of the forums I was discussing, made fun of my question and blamed me for giving hype to the news. Well now, ComputerWorld has reported that 1 in every 16 PCs across the world is being affected from this Conflicker / W32.Downadup worm.

Once affected, it prevents the user from visiting any anti-virus or anti-malware websites, which makes it very difficult to fix the infection.

Microsoft has issued a fix long back in last October via Security UpdateMS08-067, if you are not infected you can apply the patch and get secured against the vulnerability

How to Fix Downadup worm if you are already infected?

Make sure you download the latest version of Malicious Software Removal Tool from Microsoft website – LINK. This should help you clean the infection from your PC.

This virus blocks Microsofts site so how do you propose everyone go and get the fix if they are infected? Maybe some people should start mirroring the fix to get around this.

We have many infected pc’s on our network (i’m not the network admin so don’t shoot me down) – we have tried the fixes in the links but they are not detecting any virus – whereas MS Forefront is , we are also experiencing typical problems associcate with Conficker. Also MS Forefront reports finding the same.

Any constructvie help appreciated?

I think I may have the conflicker worm on my laptop. I ran Avast in the boot phase, and now when I log in it immediately logs me out. What do I need to do???

@Kristi,
I do not think its conficker. Conficker doesn’t block you from logging in to your PC, it runs in the background and acts like a zombie. This must be some ‘Virus’, so try some other antivirus like Avira/Nod32
