Twitter is swiftly emerging as one of the most popular social networking / microblogging website in recent times. It has become a haven for Internet marketers and business magnets to promote their new Websites & businesses to a targeted set of audience. If you are new to Twitter or new to Blogging, this small tip will help you in setting up a Twitter counter on your blog.

Why Twitter Counter?

As I said before, Twitter is a great option to promote your blog posts, especially since people “choose” to follow you and your followers can “retweet” about your blog posts. So, it surely helps if you have a good number of people as your followers. And one of the best ways to increase your follower count is by putting up a Twitter Counter on your blog, once you cross a decent number.

TwitterCounter is a third party service which provides detailed stats of an user. It keeps track of total number of followers, tweets and other vital statistics.

In addition, it will try to predict your follower count in future base on the average calculated. It also has nice Flash showing the number your follower in the past history and future prediction in a nice linear graph.

To add TwitterCounter to your website, follow the steps below:

  • Go to TwitterCounter website and type your Twitter username in the textbox and click on “Show”
  • Then click “Get more followers: Add TwitterCounter to your site, blog or social network” at the top of next page.
  • In this new page, you will see four counters in different styles. The JavaScript code will be given below each counter.
  • Pick one of the counter style that you like (the one which suits your website design) and copy the JavaScript code.
  • Go to your Widget section page in your WordPress.
  • Add a new “Text” widget to your sidebar. If you like, you can use existing “Text” widget in your sidebar and append the code to it.
  • You can also add the javascript directly in your theme just like I have done on top right header bar.

I used to use the twitter counter on my site until I started using Yoast’s API script to show my last tweet – that also shows a follower count. Are you familiar with the script?

I found it really hard to see the twitter counter on your site. Have you considered putting it to the top right next to your adsense? It may also draw peoples attention to the links :)
