Almost all the removable storage media, be it CD / DVD or Floppy Disks or USB flash drives, will have Autorun.Inf file which is a configuration file that decides which actions to perform when a new removable storage drive is plugged in to the PC. Probably, the idea behind using this configuration file was to auto-run songs / movies /software installable when the drive is inserted into the PC.
Unfortunately, spywares and malwares like Downadup / Conficker or WinFlashGuard take full advantage of this feature in order to install and spread themselves. This is achieved by copying a malicious executable onto the removable drives and infecting the autorun.inf file, instructing its own malicious file to run silently in the background.
How to secure the USB from Autorun.inf infection?
Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine comes to the rescue. It is a freeware developed by Panda Security services and it helps to block the virus from spreading via the removable storage media like USB drives.
The free Panda USB Vaccine allows users to vaccinate their PCs in order to disable AutoRun completely so that no program from any USB/CD/DVD drive (regardless of whether they have been previously vaccinated or not) can auto-execute. This is a really helpful feature as there is no user friendly and easy way of completely disabling AutoRun on a Windows PC.
