Nothing can compare with being right in the track of totality for a few precious minutes, even if you have to travel thousands of miles to be there. But what if you’re stuck in the States? Will Americans be totally in the dark when the moon’s shadow sweeps over Earth early Wednesday?

On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half of Earth. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan’s Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean. – NASA

Even though Wednesday’s total solar eclipse won’t come anywhere near North America, you can still see a small-screen version of the spectacle on your computer monitor, courtesy of the Internet and a fearless band of Webcasters.

The eclipse starts at 5:24 pm PDT on July 21st (which is July 22nd on the eastern side of the world). Between 6:37 pm PDT and 6:43 pm PDT, the moon will be completely covered by the sun. At 8:03 pm PDT, the sun will make its last contact with the moon and the eclipse will be over.

The eclipse will be visible by site from a narrow corridor:

1. Northern India
2. Eastern Nepal
3. Northern Bangladesh
4. Bhutan
5. Northern Myanmar
6. Central China
7. The Pacific Ocean
8. Ryukyu Islands
9. Marshall Islands
10. Kiribati
