George Hotz a.k.a GeoHot was the first one to release BlackRa1n tool to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.2. The initial version had many issues, and now most of them have been fixed in the latest version – Blackra1n RC2.
Blackra1n RC2 can jailbreak all iPhone’s (2G/3G/3GS) and iPod touches (1G/2G/3G) running iPhone firmware 3.1.2. It can also tethered jailbreak 3.1 OOTB iPod touch 8GB and all the new iPhone 3GS’s. In case you have already used Blackra1n then there is no need to rerun Blackra1n rc2.
Features of Blackra1n RC2
* Fixed all issues that you might had when jailbreaking iPhone 3G with Blackra1n RC1.
* Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB iPod touch 8GB and all the new iPhone 3GS’s.

Just re-jailbroke. Definitely worth it. Waited for blackra1n before I went to 3.1.2. It’s too bad apple won’t make some of these features native. Might be a big deciding factor when it’s time get a new phone.

Hmm had so many issues with Version 1 of blackra1n I was skeptical about using this version….
However I just used it and all seems to be working well.
My iPhone was already upgraded to 3.1.2 with the 5.11.7 baseband.
I left my phone on, connected it to my hp dv4 and then downloaded blackra1n.
Then I clicked make it ra1n and voila. I didn’t have to run it in compatibility mode or even put it on my c-drive, I launched it straight from my downloads folder.
In all it took about 45 sec…it went to the restore screen then to the screen with geohot. Stayed there about 30 seconds. The done, wait for phone to reboot screen popped up before it was finished.
All seems to be working fine though.

Hey guys,
I jailbroke my iphone 3gs running on 3.1 (5.11.7) basebandwith the new blackrain. Does this mean that this is a tethered jailbreak and everytime my battery dies i will loose all the data inserted.
Thank you,
Rasa

I don’t know about anyone else, but here’s what I did: I updated from 3.1 to 3.1.2 on 12-30-09. Then I downloaded blackra1n. I installed it, ran it, and clicked on “make it rain”. It worked like a charm. It even restored tethering for me that I lost when I upgraded to 3.1. The only thing that is annoying, is that iTunes keeps trying to alert me that it has a carrier profile update that needs to be installed. I rejected it because I’m afraid I’ll lose tethering or my jailbreak/unlock will be screwed up. I think it immediately fixed the tethering because I still had the profile installed that you download to make tethering work in 3.0 and 3.0.1. I didn’t have to do anything. Another thing that’s odd is that when I’m surfing the net while tethered, it doesn’t show up in Network under System Preferences on my mac. It works, but there’s nothing onscreen indicating that it’s working except for the fact that I can get online.

I have a 3G Version 3.1.2 Firmware 05.11.07.
Used Blackra1n with Cydia jailbreak and unlocked perfectly to my UK provider.
Got MMS, Tethering using APN profile from BenM.at
Read somewhere that Blackra1n should be uninstalled after jailbreaking so I unistalled Blackra1n app, BUT Cydia disappeared along with it.
I want to download other apps but without Cydia or similar how can I do that?
I particularly want to edit the carrier.plist to get rid of that pesky “Call Forwarding Active – Dismiss” message
Tried re-installing Blackra1n, but that just re-boots the phone now. I really do not want to restore the phone – is there another way to install Cydia please.

Kristen- Its likely that your iphone is a tethered jailbreak. Meaning everytime that the phone is powered off or the springboard restarted it will require to be plugged into PC and black rain run again. You will not lose anything that has been previously installed. Its best to not turn off ipod or iphone on a tethered jailbreak.
But if you do ,no worry ,just plug in and make it rain(blackrain).
