Coming back from a day’s break, we present another unique and nice software as part of our Christmas Giveaway. If you remember, in our announcement post, we had promised freebies for our readers with Mac and Linux as well. Of-course majority of the giveaways were Windows based (considering our reader base using Windows), but we have a split introduction and promotion of CodeWeavers Crossover Mac and Crossover Linux.
Whether you’re running a Linux or Mac OS X machine, chances are you need a way to run at least some Windows applications or games that aren’t available on your platform of choice. CodeWeavers Crossover for Mac and Linux allow Windows apps on your Mac and Linux without Windows respectively. This is supposedly better and faster than having a dual boot or using VMWare and other Virtual machine solutions.
CodeWeavers Crossover for Mac
CrossOver Mac allows you to install many popular Windows applications and games on your Intel Mac. CrossOver includes an easy to use, single click interface, which makes installing Windows software simple and fast. Once installed, your application integrates seamlessly in OS X. Just click and run your application directly from the OS X Finder. Clicking a Windows file or document, including email attachments will launch the appropriate Windows program, allowing you to work on the files. Best of all, you do it all easily and affordably, without needing a Microsoft operating system license.
Because it doesn’t use Windows and no Windows license is required, the total cost of using CrossOver is much less than virtual machine products such as Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion. CrossOver also doesn’t use the CPU bandwidth and doesn’t require the large amount of RAM that virtual machine software such Parallels or VMware require. The drawback is that CrossOver only supports a selected Windows applications, including Outlook. The company said that it would be adding support for more applications as time goes on. Click here to see the supported applications list.
CrossOver Mac Pro 8 is a smart application; it relies on the open-source Wine application for running Windows apps and streamlines the install process. Adding new Windows software is easy. Just place your install CD in your Intel Mac, and CrossOver will recognize it and offer to begin the installation process. CrossOver then completes the installation and configures your application to run on your Mac. That’s all there is to it.
CodeWeavers Crossover for Linux
Crossover for Linux is very similar to Crossover for Mac. It has support for several applications, including Quicken 2009, Internet Explorer 7, and Adobe Photoshop CS2. According to Codeweavers, it also offers improved support for Microsoft Office 2003/2007, Outlook 2000, and Adobe FrameMaker, among others titles. The CrossOver Standard and Pro versions (which sell for $39.95 and $69.95) include six and 12 months of paid support, respectively. The Pro version offers some other benefits, including multi-seat deployment tools and physical software media.
The company limits its formal technical support, however, to a shorter list of about 130 Windows apps, including business productivity tools, graphics software, Web design and development apps, and even Windows system software such as DirectX.
Personally, I feel there is a lot of scope to improve on the current software and with Crossover 9 being in roadmap, I am sure the company will iron out the existing bugs and adds support for more and more Windows applications.
Crossover for Mac and Linux – Free Licenses giveaway

Hi, I’ve used this software before and found it really easy to cross platform applications from windows to mac. The quality you get from playing windows platform games on Macs is the same and sometimes it even performs better. So I hope to win one license so that I can continue using great windows applications on my Mac.
Thanks

Hi,
Currently setting up a Linux system, with the ambition to completely switch over; so this would come in handy.
Am I correct to assume the standard version is being given away?
Would be nice to know since they quite differ in what they support.
Good luck everyone,

December 13th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Recently I crossed over to Mac but as most Win users know there is a far greater propensity to develop apps for Win OS. That being the case I am using trials of VMWare and Parallels to run certain Win progs right now. I only have a few trial days left so being “gifted” with this program would be a blast. Count me in please.
December 13th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Somehow I couldn’t get WINE working. I want to try luck with this. To increase my chance of winning this giveaway, I’ve also posted in linuxforums.org; here is the link for forum post…

I’ve just installed Ubuntu for trying out and this software could really make the change much easier.
December 13th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
I could really use this, I am currently dual-booting with vista/kubuntu linux. I would much prefer to switch completely to Linux, rather than have to reboot everytime I need to use a Windows only app. The interruption in workflow really, really adds up.
December 13th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
I’m starting to learn how to use kUbuntu and would be interested in the Linux version as well.

Thanks, I’d like to enter for an alternative to Wine on Linux.
December 14th, 2009 at 12:09 am
I switched to linux few years ago. You cannot ignore the plenity of features at desktop level, the satisfaction when you’re involved in the community’s projects and the feeling of freedom from this world. But, unfortunately, I’m still stuck in a “dual-boot life” because of few apps glued in the Windows world. Crossover could be a chance to clean up the boot menu keeping a single entry: linux.
December 14th, 2009 at 12:47 am
I am linux user, i hope win this contest..
December 14th, 2009 at 12:51 am
Sweet! I could use this to run older software without having to mess with another OS install.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:05 am
Hi there.
I would love to have a license for Linux. I would gladly promote both your site and Crossover’s via an in-depth review within 30 days of winning / being granted a license.
Though there is no particular Windows app I feel the need to run on Linux, I do have valid MS Office, Photoshop, and Quicken applications that I would install and try out.
It is very important that people know about this option for them. The more, the better – and anything I can do to help, I will.
December 14th, 2009 at 1:46 am
I have always wanted to try linux but was put off because I thought I would not be able to use all my favourite apps that work on windows. Now crossover may just give me the chance to do that? Hence I would really like a pro license… The website states codeweaver for windows does the following:
Allows you to run many popular office productivity software applications on Linux, such as Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Project and Visio, graphics applications like Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, and Adobe Photoshop, and many more. Not only that, but CrossOver Linux also allows you to use many Windows Web browser plugins, such as QuickTime and Shockwave, directly on your Linux browser. Runs on many popular Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu, Red Hat, Novell, SUSE, Xandros, Mandriva and others. No Windows Operating System license required; CrossOver is a complete replacement for your Windows OS as far as your applications are concerned. Your Windows Linux compatibility solution!
In summation a license would rock – I will post this post in the donationcoder.com forum (if possible)! Keep up the good work raju and others…
December 14th, 2009 at 2:09 am
I had tried to install some windows apps on a linux machine sometime back and it failed miserably. This would be perfect for me. Thanks for this giveaway.

Very useful to run windows applications under linux.

With codeweavers, I can now consider switch to Mac. I wasn’t so far as I did not want to run a Windows VM within Mac. I use some of windows products (project, visio etc.) a lot.
December 14th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Let me in… I would like to use this software so that Ubuntu becomes more useful for me~

December 14th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Hi TechPP
I use windows every day, and linux (Ubuntu) a couple of times every week.
Im slowly but surely moving on to Linux, but it is hard to let go, since I use my office 2003. I just learned about CodeWeavers Crossover (thanks to you guys), which enables me to use office 2003 on Linux. Now nothing would hold me back for switching completely. So please count me in for your competition.
Thanks and merry Christmas to all.
December 15th, 2009 at 2:18 am
I have no idea if this is still open or not but if it is I would like a key.
Reason: My old licence ran out.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:57 am
I would love to have this so I could run my Windows software on Linux without the need for a virtual machine. Count me in. Thanks.
December 15th, 2009 at 11:00 am
would like to win crossover for linux, thanks
December 15th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
I want one too! I would love to run all my windows programs on Ubuntu.
December 16th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
This is useful to save OS licensing cost while still being able to use Windows applications in Linux. Although some applications may not run due to different libraries, it should be able to run majority of Windows applications
December 16th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
This will be a great application for me to test in a Linux environment to push for our Linux Lab here @ work….
count me IN….
December 17th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I tried cross over for linux and it works really well. Thanks for the offer.
December 18th, 2009 at 6:40 am
I could use a copy of Crossover too.
December 18th, 2009 at 7:27 am
Why do I wish to have the Crossover for Mac? It’s really very simple: I have always thought it would be neat to be ambidextrous. Since having a Mac, wonderful though it is, is the technological equivalent of being a Southpaw in this world (it just isn’t made for poor left-handers. There’s no better way for a nation, in my humble opinion, to subtly indicate that it thinks you’re a mutant than to purposefully put drinking fountain handles on the right side. Toilets seem to have caught on to the injustice of the inequality, since their handles are on the left), it’s frustrating to be locked out of downloading/installing many programs b/c they’re only Windows-based. But I terribly digress.
Since I only have a Mac, I am a “leftie” – I can’t use a lot of the darn programs out there b/c Mac just isn’t as popular (I’ll mercifully spare you the junior high/high school analogies). Should I win a Crossover for Mac, however, well, I would be as equal-opportunity an operating system user as I am someone who gives equal opportunity to any left-handed people I know.
Thanks!
Tina
