The next version of Google’s Android mobile OS is just around the corner and it has been code-named Froyo. Except for the name there hasn’t been much information officially on what this new OS version has to offer, but still we do know quite a bit about Android 2.2 from various sources. So here are some of the coolest features of the upcoming Android 2.2 release.
Android 2.2 Froyo
1. Android 2.2 will be a lot faster
This is the most exciting part of the new release. According to some benchmarking reports, Android 2.2 will be 450% faster than Android 2.1 on a Nexus One! Now that’s crazy. Even if we bargain the hype the new version must still be faster.
2. Wi-Fi hotspot
Android 2.2 Froyo will turn your Android phone into a WiFi hotspot! You can then broadcast your 3G signal to ANY device you like. The new update will also support tethering!
3. Integrated Flash
Android 2.2 Froyo will come with integrated Flash support. This was one of the few things officially confirmed by Google. Have a look at Nexus One running Flash 10.1
4. Install Apps on Memory Card
This was one of the basic features missing in Android and thankfully it will be addressed in the latest Android update. Now we can expect more and better apps which are memory intensive, which means a better experience than the casual and functional offerings currently available.
5. Automatic background app updates
This one will now be on wish-list of iPhone users. Android users need not manually update their apps since Froyo will let them set their phone to automatically upgrade applications in the background. Not to worry, you will have control over it and can turn it off if you want.
Android 2.2 Release Date
The release date for Android 2.2 has not been announced yet, but we expect it to be released during the Google I/O developer conference on May 19-20, which is less than a week away!

Thanks for another great piece Raju.
I just had to touch on one of the points you listed.
“Android 2.2 will be 450% faster than Android 2.1″

He said “With today’s technology, its impossible to improve software performance by 450%. And that statement is ridiculous. Our internal testing puts that figure at about 30-50% using certain functions of Android. Many things within the OS will see no or only very slight improvements.”
Either way I am looking forward to 2.2 on my new HTC EVO.
That observation of 450% is based on the test carried out by AndroidPolice (I guess) on a native app. This is why I have also mentioned it could be an exaggeration!
