When Microsoft launched Office 2007, they also announced a brand new way to store their documents in a XML-based file format called DOCX. Retrieving images from word documents have never been easy and straight-forward, be it .doc or .docx formats. Extracting images in .DOC based documents involved dragging and dropping of images onto the desktop or by saving the document as .HTML, but things are much easier with .DOCX documents. Extracting Images with Word 2007

As I mentioned earlier, .DOCX is an xml based format and when you save a document in Word 2007's default DOCX format, you are in effect saving a zip file that contains all the elements of the document. You can easily extract the files from that zipped file by opening it with a zip utility such as WinRar or Winzip - or if you change the file extension from DOCX to ZIP recent Windows versions should be able to open it directly. So, here is a simple guide to extract images
  • Make a copy of your docx file. In case its not DOCX, save the file as DOCX.
  • Now rename the type from .docx to .zip
  • Right Click and extract where you want.

I recently upgraded my iPhone to iOS 4.0 and came across a weird SMS notification which I have never seen before. Hence not sure if it is a bug from upgrading to iOS4 or that it has always been there and I have just never came across it previously.

The Phantom Alert

iphone-sms-phantom I had an alert saying that I had an unread SMS message, although if you went into the Messages Application there were no blue dots indicating I had an unread message. As a precaution I went into all the names of people from whom I received messages scrolled up and down to see if I had missed one by chance, then exited the app. It was still there, I done this several times even going back several days scrolling up and down in case I had missed one, I hadn’t but the alert was still there on the home screen. I also tried switching the phone off and on to see if this would resolve the problem, but not luck. I read one article on this type of issue from iPhone 2.0 days, and it just said to delete your messages which I did...
Recently I have had a laptop to clear up that had been infected with "Anti-malware Doctor".  Normally I would just recommend rebuilding the machine i.e formatting the drive and reinstalling windows, the problem with this approach was the user had several photos/documents & files that they had not backed up and would not like to lose them.

The Problem

This software completely takes over the machine, there was nothing that could be done under the user account, the CPU was constantly pegging at 100% usage and it would not allow any executables to run. Below are the steps that I took to clean the machine. At first I logged into another user account, and on a CD I had this little utility, rkill.com which identifies and kills running processes.  After a good while where it could run it managed to kill the following: • C:\windows\system32\regedit.exeC:\windows\system32\rundll32.exeC:\windows\Temp\_ex_08.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.exe After these had been killed it allowed the PC to run as normal.

Cleanup

I then quickly installed  Malware Bytes - Anti Malware software, and I updated the software with all the latest files and then immediately ran a Quick Scan. Once this has completed it had found well over 80 items installed...
