Facebook Places is a cool feature which was just introduced by facebook using which the users can share their current location or place with other Facebook friends. But then, for some of you, this feature sounds creepy and an invasion to your privacy. Well, if you are one of those, then here is a simple guide to turn off Facebook Places and save whatever privacy is left on Facebook.

Turn off Facebook Places

1. Login to your Facebook account and go to Account > Privacy Settings on top right.

2. Then click on ‘Customize Settings‘ link under ‘Sharing on Facebook‘ option.

3. On the next screen scroll down to “Things I share” section. Here look for “Places I check in“. Click on the dropdown box next to it and select ‘Only Me‘ option by clicking on ‘Customize’

Good tutorial to protect our privacy. I have kept it limited to Friends Only though. Thinking of changing it.

Good tutorial. Even if you are using Places and sharing with “friends of friends” you still may not want your friends broadcasting your location into their friends’ feed. Unfortunately Facebook opts you into this. Here’s how to shut that off: http://safeandsavvy.f-secure.com/2010/09/01/sharing-through-friends/

Everything FaceBook does is designed to make money at the expense of its users privacy and dignity..I can’t believe that 600 million users have walked trance like into its clutches and appear unable to break free ,it has them in a vice like grip.
Zuckerburg must wonder just how far he can push it.Giving out users home addresses and phone numbers to 3rd party developers in the latest wheeze. Wake up !

this method doesnt hide the stream of check-ins from your “friends”, which you may not want to see, if you want to hide the check-ins your friends make, try FB Purity, its a browser extension that lets you filter out various story types and other facebook features including facebook places and facebook questions among others. you can try it here: http://www.fbpurity.com
