nexus-two

The clock ticks 12 and it's Rumor time! Google and Samsung are rumored to be announcing a Nexus Two Android phone on November 8th in New York. Samsung has already sent out some invites to the tech community for a mysterious press conference. All we know about the event is that Samsung will launch a "new Android device".

As with Google Nexus One, the expectation is that Nexus Two will feature the latest hardware and most current version of Android - which will be Android Gingerbread aka Android 2.3! Taylor Wimberly from Android and Me is the person behind the rumor report that Samsung, not HTC, will announce the N2 on 8th November. This news comes from various “trusted sources”. Over the years, Wimberly has had considerable success rates when it came to rumors and predictions, but this one can, at best, be considered a strong rumor. Wimberly claims that N2 will be launched on multiple carriers. Google though, had made it clear much earlier that Nexus One was their first and last self-branded and marketed phone. But that wouldn't stop them from partnering with seasoned manufacturers like...
Facebook is launching a new feature called Friendship Page - which is like a document all of your interactions on the network with particular friends on designated pages. The Friendship Page will display public Wall posts and comments between two friends, photos in which both are tagged, Events they RSVP'd for together and other information.

As much as I am paranoid about privacy on Facebook, this is a welcome feature really. You'll be able to see Friendship pages between yourself and a friend, or between any two other people in which you have permission to view both peoples' profiles. After all, Facebook was is meant to connect, build and cherish relationships! I am sure some of you will still find a reason or two to curse Facebook, but this feature is a wonderful example on how user activity data can be used to tell a story by cross referencing and proper data analysis. Friendship Pages will probably be rolled out throughout the day, not all users are able to see them yet. They will be linked-to under the main profile photo on a friend's profile pages and in the newsfeed next to items announcing new...
Hell yeah! You read it right! Google is vigorously advertising Apple's iPhone 4 on --- Facebook! An amalgamation of three of the world's leading brands - Google, Apple & Facebook. If you don't trust me, have a look at the screenshot below.

google-iphone-facebook

Don't worry; it's not Photoshopped. It's a real Facebook ad of a fake company advertising a real product and aimed at scamming unsuspected Facebookers. The ad you see in the screenshot above is by a company called Viaziz, which is openly fooling people by impersonating as Google. It is a typical auction based scam site, which claims that the last iPhone 4 was auctioned for Rs. 6.72 (around 15 cents).

This is enough for seasoned web users to identify the intent of the website and go away. But newbies would fall for it and end up getting cheated of their hard earned money.

Facebook Ads Review Process is Plain Farce?

The intent of the post is to question the effectiveness of Facebook ads review & approval process. Ironically, the Facebook ad guidelines page clearly states under Section 2(a) that -

gmail-auto-advance

A feature of GMail which I have loved the most is this - whenever you open an email in your Gmail inbox and then archive or delete it, GMail takes you back to the inbox (or any other parent folder of the email). But then, many people might like it to instead go to the next conversation, just like the way it is in Yahoo Mail. Well, that is exactly what the folks at GMail have introduced in their Labs section - ability to go to the next message by default. As they explain in their blog post, there are keyboard shortcuts - "]" and "[" for archiving and going to the next/previous conversation, but for those who want the feature to be enabled by default, you can go to the Labs tab in Settings and look for "Auto-advance", enable it and click on "save Changes" button. By default, “Auto-advance” will advance to the previous (older) conversation in your inbox -- perfect for people who read their newest mail first. If you usually read your oldest email first and would rather advance to the next (newer) conversation, you can change the direction from...
