Apple has scheduled a press event – Back to the Mac on October 20th. As per the latest rumors making rounds, Apple will launch 11.6″ Macbook Air, the lightest and smallest Macbook ever!
Several sources close to Apple has claimed to Apple Insider that the new 11.6″ laptops have been in manufacture for about a week in Taiwan. According to this source, the new models will do away with existing options for a conventional hard-disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) in favor something described as an “SSD Card” that lacks a traditional drive enclosure and more closely resembles a stick of RAM, yet isn’t easily user-replaceable.
11.6″ Macbook Air – Features
The expected features of the new 11.6 inch Macbook Air include the new SSD card technology explained above, faster boot times and “instant-on” capabilities when waking up from sleep, just like iPhone & iPad.
The new model could weigh as little as 2.7lbs, sport a unibody enclosure that makes some use of carbon fiber, and possibly include the first CPU microprocessors from AMD to find their way inside a Mac.
According to the source, the new Air will sport an older version of Intel’s Core processor, and the spec sheet will list Nvidia’s MCP89 chipset. Apple will also show that the new MacBook Air has a longer battery life.
New 11.6 inch Macbook Air – Price
Everything about the new Air will be smaller, including the price. The exact final price isn’t known right now, but it will be “significantly lower” than the current $1,499 starting price, as quoted by CNET.
