Less than a week back WSJ reported that they have enough reasons to believe CDMA iPhone coming to Verizon in Jan 2011 and now again, they are reporting that Apple is in talks with two Indian CDMA operators - Reliance Communications and Tata Indicom for bringing the iPhone 4 on CDMA in India.
The discussions have apparently been ongoing for four or five months according to one WSJ source. At present, Apple is selling the outdated iPhone 3GS handsets in India in association with Airtel and Vodafone. iPhone 4 launch in India was expected to be in October, but there are no real indications of that happening anytime soon.
Though the CDMA market is just around 20% in India, it is still huge compared to other parts in the world, with more than 670 million CDMA subscribers in the country. iPhone's GSM version has till now failed to make any impact on Indian market due to various factors including the absurd data plans and unsubsidized prices. The CDMA version might not really outdo what the GSM version of iPhone has done till now. It is still a welcome news for Indian consumers...
The new India Rupee symbol has now been added into the Unicode standard. This comes within 3 months of selecting and approving the new symbol.
Though many of the Indian websites and newspapers had started using the font unofficially, for widespread usage, the new Rupee symbol had to be accepted by the Unicode Consortium's Unicode Technical Committee that is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Unicode Standard, including the Unicode Character Database.
Yesterday, The Unicode Consortium announced the new Unicode Standard 6.0 that adds 2088 characters, with over 1000 new symbols, including that for the Indian Rupee.
The official Unicode character code for the Indian Rupee symbol is U+20B9. Please note that you might not be able to use the Rupee sign right away, since none of the major font families have updated their fonts to support Unicode Standard 6.0. The easiest way to determine which of the installed fonts on your PC can display the newly added Rupee sign is to visit this page and check for yourself.
