playbook-vs-ipad The battle has begun. Blackberry's Playbook vs Apple's iPad. The Round one of the battle for tablet supremacy is initiated by RIM and they have created a side-by-side comparison of the Blackberry PlayBook and Apple iPad. The comparison runs tests on browser speed to see which of the two tablets performs best on loading up particular websites. It also focuses on Adobe Flash support and HTML5 performance. In order to keep the test fair, they cleared the cache of the browsers to make sure each device was pulling down fresh data from the webservers. Of course it's RIM's demo, but the tests did reveal the better processing capabilities of Playbook. iPad has a big advantage over PlayBook because of its better and bigger 10" screen compared to PlayBook's 7" display. Check out the video now Playbook's firmware is still work-in-progress. So we can expect the browser to get even better as RIM polish the firmware closer to launch. But then, PlayBook isn't expected until Q1 of 2011. By then we might have iPad 2 as well. We would like to reserve our judgment till we...

facebook-mail

Whoa! The rumors have come true yet again. Mark Zuckerberg just announced a brand new Facebook Messaging product which is a combination of 3 things 1. Seamless Messaging system - Facebook’s social inbox handles email, but also SMS and IM. 2. Conversation History - the new service will have a single conversation history for all your communication with a person, regardless of whether it comes via email, SMS, IM etc. 3. Social Inbox - Because Facebook knows who your friends are, you can see only messages that are really relevant.

It's not email. It's Social messaging!

Mark says it's not email, but email is just a part of it. It's social messaging which is email + chat + sms, all of which are seamlessly integrated. Social Inbox is an inbox for filtering the messages you want to see from friends. Interestingly enough, Facebook is handing out facebook.com e-mail addresses to all users. Here are the keys to what a modern messaging system needs according to Zuckerberg:
  • seamless
  • informal
  • immediate
  • personal
  • simple
  • minimal
  • short

Well, just like Google Facebook is going the invite way. To start off, few people will be getting the invites to test the messaging system. So you...

scopophobia

Hilarious! Isn't it? But I wasn't sure if I can term this Geeky fun. But hey! who (other than Wikipedia) can represent geeks on the web? ;) On a serious note, feel free to help Wikipedia stay free. [via]
kinect-hack-3d-webcam Not even a fortnight since Microsoft's Project Natal aka Kinect launch, hackers & developers have managed to break the Kinect code and forge an open source driver. Now, the real experimentation have begun. The latest concept being demoed on YouTube, comes from Oliver Kreylos has developed a C++ implementation of Kinect that allows for 3D reconstruction of a room using a single Kinect system. By combining the color and the depth image captured by the Microsoft Kinect, one can project the color image back out into space and create a “holographic” representation of the persons or objects that were captured. Some extra details picked up from Oliver's page gives fodder to the geeks & techies-
Based on the reverse engineering work of Hector Martin (@marcan42 on twitter and YouTube). I didn't use any of his code, but the "magic incantations" that need to be sent to the Kinect to enable the cameras and start streaming. Those incantations were essential, because I don't own an Xbox myself, so I couldn't snoop its USB protocol.
Kreylos has some pretty big plans for his solution, the next step being to actually combine real and computer-generated imagery into a single feed,...
path A brand new anti-social personal network, Path was launched today, with the release of its iPhone app. It is a private photo sharing app similar to Instagram, except that it makes sharing photos more difficult than it needs to be. Path is founded by former Facebook Platform Manager Dave Morin, Napster co-founder Shawn Fanning and backed by a blinding cast of star investors.

How Path Works?

Path is designed to share photos with only your closest 50 friends, primarily through the app itself. You can’t Tweet out links to your photos or share them on Facebook. It is very much for personal photos and private moments, the kind of pictures you share with family and very close friends. When a friend looks at one of your photos, you're notified that they have in real time.
For each moment that you capture and add to your Path, you will see which of your friends have seen the moment in real-time. The idea is that understanding enables trust and storytelling amongst close friends and family. We hope you feel like more of your close friends are seeing life through your eyes than ever before.

Why Path has a tough road...
