kindle-fire-review

Amazon's Kindle Fire, which we dismissed as a tablet with no 3G, no camera, no nothing on its announcement, will be ready to ship starting November 24th and technology blogs in US (where it is available) have started reviewing the tablet and we see pretty mixed opinions about the device. CNET's Donald Bell says that Reviewing Kindle Fire was not an easy task and was probably his toughest assignment in 2011. Though the tablet is missing a lot of things like 3G, camera etc., Bell says that this is a tablet that wears its price tag like a bulletproof vest. At $199, it is bound to keep many people interested.

Kindle Fire: Hardware

kindle-fire-vs-playbook

(Image credit: Zdnet) Android devices have traditionally taken pride in their hardware specs. And this is where Amazon's Kindle Fire strikes the first blow. As Verge's Joshua Topolsky points out, Kindle Fire is heavily inspired from BlackBerry's Playbook. The PlayBook is bulkier, but the (glossy) screen and profile is almost identical to the Kindle Fire. Check out the comparison image to see how similar...
Update: It's now confirmed that both Airtel and Aircel will be launching iPhone 4S on November 25th. Pre-orders will begin on Nov 18th 2011. Update 2: According to Aircel store in Delhi, Apple iPhone 4S will be available for Rs 44,500 for 16GB and Rs 50,900 for 32GB. That is like $900 & $1020 respectively. Let's now wait for official confirmation. Aircel has announced on their Facebook page that they will be bringing iPhone 4S to India very soon. Though the carrier has not revealed the exact details like the date of the launch and the pricing, folks at BGR India claim that the launch will happen on midnight of November 24, which is effectively the morning of November 25 2011. Multiple sources have started confirming that November 25th as the date of the launch at-least on Aircel, while another carrier which launched iPhone 4 in India, Bharti Airtel is yet to disclose its plans. Traditionally Apple hasn't considered India as their preferred market to launch iPhones. (Read: Apple Starts Dumping iPhone 4 in India). To be fair to them, Apple has always launched their other products like iMac, Macbook Pro...
Apple has started taking orders for the factory unlocked iPhone 4S in the United States, with a starting price of $649. iPhone 4S went on sale in the US on October 14th and Apple had clearly specified that users will be able to buy SIM-free (contract-free) iPhone 4S starting November. The prices for unlocked iPhone 4S is not surprising as Apple has maintained the prices it had set for iPhone 4. The 16GB version of iPhone 4S will be available at $649 (+taxes), while the 32GB & 64GB versions are available at $749 & $849 (+taxes) respectively. It is important to note here that the unlocked iPhone 4S will work on GSM carriers like AT&T & T-Mobile in US and else where, but not on CDMA carriers like Verizon, which is quite ironical as Apple has been marketing iPhone 4S as a 'world phone'! Another important thing to note here is that the prices for unlocked iPhone 4S are...
free-vpn-iphone AnchorFree's Hotspot Shield has to be one of the most popular Free VPN services in the world right now, so much so that country specific web services like Hulu & BBC iPlayer ensure to block Hotspot Shield's IPs from their network. Yet, it is still one of the most widely used free VPN on desktops, and now, it is available for iOS devices too. Ironically, it's not a free app! Hotspot Shield was always available on iPhones, but users had to manually set it up. But now, AnchorFree has launched a native app which offers safe and private browsing and comes with an unique data compression feature which can potentially halve a user’s data consumption. Hotspot Shield for iPhone & iPad is particularly useful when you are using a public WiFi or any other unsecured network as it provides you with a protected gateway, keeping your passwords and private data secure. Hotspot Shield provides people with a temporary IP address and encrypts their data so they can browse safely, away from prying eyes. In this age, security threats to mobile phones are increasing multi-folds and services like Hotspot Shield...
Nokia has been on a long losing streak in India. The company that had ruled the market with more than 50% market share has come down to a market share of 25%. The loss of Nokia has been picked up by Indian players (from 0.9% in Q1-2008 to 33.2% in Q2-2010), Chinese Players (like G'Five) and international players like Samsung.

Nokia loses the most trusted brand status

What must be more worrying for Nokia is the fact that it had to relinquish the No.1 spot, which it had held for 3 consecutive years, to Colgate in the recent Brand Equity survey. Not only did Nokia loose the No.1 spot, but it also dropped down to the fifth spot. Considering that gaining brand value is a tougher act than gaining market share, it is a major blow to Nokia's future in India. Unsurprisingly most pundits have written off the company and the jury is out on when and not whether Nokia will lose the top spot in the Indian market. However all is not lost for the company in India. It is not simple bravado when Nokia says that it plans to capture back its 50% market share in India. In...

ie-sinking

Earlier today, Tyler Holman posted an intriguing article on Neowin about how Perception is killing Internet Explorer. Tyler claims that IE9, the latest version of the web browser is as good as its competitors like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera, but the horrible perception of IE being low on quality has resulted in continuous depletion of IE's market share. He rightfully says-
The real problem is the reputation that Internet Explorer 'earned' through the botched releases of yore. It doesn't matter how good of a product Microsoft releases, Internet Explorer has too much baggage behind it.

Falling Graph of IE

desktop-trends

A recent study by NetApps revealed confirmed the sad state of Internet Explorer in the desktop browser space. Adding to the woes, is the fact that IE has negligible share in the mobile browser space. The overall market share of Internet Explorer has fallen below 50% after a long time. The study also revealed that almost 25.4% of Internet Explorer users still use the (now) unsupported versions - IE6 & IE7, which is almost same as the percentage of...
