Apple announced the new iPad just a while back whose features and specifications almost matched up with most of the rumors we have been hearing about in the blogosphere.
Now that Apple has decided to keep selling the iPad 2 along with the new iPad, we believe some of you would like to know the key differences between the two variants. So, here we go.
New iPad vs iPad 2
Price is surely one of the key differentiators for many. As been the norm, Apple has retained the price points of the new iPad model, which starts at $499 for the 16GB WiFi only variant and $629 for 16GB WiFi+4G variant. However, Apple is cutting the price of iPad 2 by $100. So, the iPad 2 now starts at $399 for 16GB WiFi version and $529 for 16GB WiFi+3G version.
The display of the new iPad remains same as iPad 2 with 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD. But major enhancement comes in the form of resolution. The new iPad comes with 2048 x 1536 “Retina Display”, which is double that of iPad 2 with 264 pixels per inch.
3G vs 4G
The new iPad is now upgraded to the faster 4G LTE network with speeds upto 42Mbps. The new chip is dual-mode and also includes 3G HSPA+ for up to 21Mbps. iPad 2, as you know, has just HSPA+ support. The new iPad also comes with “world ready” 3G.
The new iPad comes with a brand new A5X quad-core graphics chip which gives it almost four times the graphics power than the dual-core Apple A5 chip in the iPad 2. No words yet on the RAM though.
Another major improvement comes in the form of a better camera for the new iPad. The new iSight camera boasts 5 megapixels, auto exposure and auto focus. The iPad 2 has a 0.7 megapixel camera.
If you are paranoid about the battery life of the gadgets, you don’t need to fret. The new iPad comes with an impressive battery life of up to 10 hours, or 9 hours while using 4G, much like the iPad 2. But the form factor has gone a little worse. As against 1.33 lbs of iPad 2, the new iPad will weigh 1.4 lbs with thickness increasing from 8.8mm to 9.4mm.
The new iPad will be available in US, UK, Singapore, Hong Kong and 6 other countries starting March 16th, with pre-orders starting today. iPad 2 price drop is effective today.
