This is interesting. Though defrag was enabled on Windows Scheduler, it hasn’t ever run before. Screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/HGbLB.png. I’m using Windows 7 on Macbook Air which comes with an SSD (and not HDD). If that is the reason for not running the scheduled task, I’m not sure.

Be that as it may, I still believe that the third party apps work much better than the Win Defrag. After a defrag with Win Defrag, the other apps still find lots of fragmentation and manage to take it down even more.

Funny you didn’t check this out properly before commenting! Many people seem unaware that since Windows Vista, Windows automatically defrags by default at 1am on Wednesday. Check out this support article from Microsoft:

Just google around and you’ll find lots of info to back this up.

Scheduled defrag has been included in Windows Vista and Windows 7. It runs by default on Wednesday morning at 1 am. I didn’t have to enable it, it was enabled by default after installation.

The Windows defrag utility is fine and there’s no need to run third party options. If you think about it, Microsoft knows their OS better than anyone else so their utility is fine for defragging.

My Task Scheduler does not have that task enabled by default, and none of the others I have checked. This leds me to think that this is not a default feature at all. Also, the Windows default Defrag is not that good. I used to run it pretty often, and when I used some of the programs featured here I found a fragmentation rate of over 50%.

If you’re running Windows Vista or Windows 7, your laptop or PC is already automatically defragging once a week by default. Check Windows Task Scheduler and you will see this is enabled by default. There’s no need to defrag on these systems now.
