Samsung has announced couple of crazily oversized smartphones – Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8, both powered by Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS, dual core processors and 8MP cameras. More importantly, both of them carry the same old look of Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.

There are hardly any weird screen sizes Samsung hasn’t tried in recent times, but a 6.3-inch display for a smartphone should shock many. But it’s clear that Samsung Galaxy Mega series will have more oversized screens to follow. For now, let’s take a look at these two newly announced models.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3

Galaxy-Mega-6.3

Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes with 6.3-inch HD (1280 x 720 pixels) TFT capacitive display, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 8MP rear shooter, 1.9MP front shooter, 1.5GB RAM, 32oo mAh battery and more. Below are the detailed specifications of Galaxy Mega 6.3

  • 6.3-inch HD 720p TFT capacitive screen
  • 1.7GHz dual-core processor
  • 1.5 GB RAM
  • 8/16GB Internal Memory
  • expandable memory up to 64GB with micro SD
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS
  • 8MP auto-focus rear camera with LED Flash
  • 1.9MP front-facing camera
  • 7.9mm thickness
  • weight: 199 grams
  • 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
  • 3200 mAh battery

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8

Galaxy-Mega-5.8

Galaxy Mega 5.8 is the smaller model (ah, the irony) with screen of just 5.8-inches. It comes with Android 4.2 as well, but most other specs are inferior to its bigger brother, except that it supports dual-sim. Let’s take a look-

  • 5.8-inch qHD TFT capacitive screen
  • 1.4GHz dual-core processor
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS
  • 1.5 GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal Memory
  • expandable memory up to 64GB with micro SD
  • 8MP auto-focus rear camera with LED Flash
  • 1.9MP front-facing camera
  • Dual SIM (GSM + GSM) with dual standby
  • 9.0mm thickness
  • weight: 182 grams
  • 2600 mAh battery

It’s interesting to know what was the thought process behind introducing these obnoxiously huge smartphones. It’s true that Galaxy Note 2 was well received, but that was not just because it came with big screen. It carried some of the best specs at that time and provided top-notch experience.

With Galaxy Mega series, it looks like Samsung is aiming towards the mid-tier market, but it’s not clear what the price point of these two models will be. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 & 5.8 would be available globally starting from Europe and Russia in May 2013.
