Microsoft launched its Office 365 University suite back in October, 2012, targeting college and university students. The launch price in the United States was $79.99 for a four-year license, which translates into about $1.67 a month. Now, the Redmond giant has announced that college and university students from India can also benefit from the offer.

The Office 365 University suite will be offered to almost all accredited educational institutions in India: top 55 premier education institutes, 563 universities and 34,000 colleges. Both full-time and part-time Indian students will have to opportunity to purchase online an Office 365 subscription 4-year plan.

Office 365 University now available for Indian students

The prices for the Indian market are the same – Rs 4,199 for a four-year subscription which actually means Rs 87 per month. Through the Office 365 University suite, Indian students will have access to Office products such as:office-365-university-india

  • Word
  • PowerPoint
  • Excel
  • OneNote
  • Outlook
  • Publisher
  • Access

The Office 365 University suite also comes with: Office on Demand, another 20 GB of SkyDrive storage. The Office 365 University licence can be used only on two PCs. Ramkumar Pichai, general manager at Microsoft’s India Office Division:

The special pricing for students will help provide them opportunities and empower them to develop the necessary skills to be successful in the fast-paced campus environment, making them future-ready as they join the workforce of tomorrow

Vishal Tripathi, who works as a principal analyst at Gartner, also expressed his views on Microsoft’s move:

The student community is the largest user of pirated software of Microsoft. This pricing and offering will ensure a high number of users start using this version. So, from zero revenue, they will start making some money in this segment. Second, if students like the offering, it would be huge mouth-to-mouth publicity

The prices for the Office 365 University are affordable for most students, so you can consider this a good tech deal. The Office 365 suite is playing an important role in Microsoft’s business, and that’s why they’ve recently launched Office Mobile for both iPhone and Android users. Sadly, those who own an iPad or Android tablet won’t be able to use Office Mobile.

To be able to obtain the Office 365 University suite, Indian students will go to the web page where they will input their college or university credentials or send them manually. As a side-fact, you should know that even those students that are in their last year of studies will be able to get Office 365 for four years. Not only students will be able to benefit from this, but also faculty and staff in the accredited Indian education institutions.
