Microsoft has been hunting for a new CEO ever since it has been announced that Steve Ballmer would step down from the position that he held for more than 13 years. Back in August 23, Microsoft said that Ballmer would resign within 12 months and that moment has come today as Microsoft’s Board of Directors has appointed Satya Nadella as the Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors. Nadella had previously worked as the Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group.
In a recent tweet, Steven Sinofsky, the former President of the Windows Division at Microsoft said that Nadella is an “empathetic leader with a deep understanding of building product at scale” also mentioning that he’s very confident that Satya Nadella is “the best choice to lead the Microsoft cloud era“.
Bill Gates to closely help Nadella while John Thompson takes over as the new Chairman
Bill Gates, the iconic Microsoft Founder, is now currently Member of the Board of Directors and he will be supporting Nadella in shaping new technology and products. John Thompson, a lead independent director for the Board of Directors, will take over the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors that Gates held. Speaking to Nadella’s naming as the new CEO, here’s what Bill Gates said:
During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella. Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.
Nadella has joined Microsoft back in 1992, so he has a long history of working at Microsoft. He is one of the masterminds behind the largest cloud infrastructures in the world supporting Bing, Xbox, Office and other services. His naming as a CEO of Microsoft shows where the company is heading next, and this is a trend that not only Microsoft has been following – the power of the cloud. But, of course, there are plenty more things that mister Nadella is good at – he’s now got our attention. It’s also interesting to observe that Bill Gates will be closely helping Nadella in shaping future products, so could it be that Gates will leave his mark on the next Surface tablets?
Speaking of his new role, Nadella said that
“Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionized the world through technology, and I couldn’t be more honored to have been chosen to lead the company”
After a collaboration that lasted for more than 20 years, Steve Ballmer, the former CEO, apparently shares the same opinion as Gates and the rest of the team, saying that
“Satya is the right leader at the right time for Microsoft”
On a personal note, Satya is the kind of leader that I like more, as he’s calm, confident and with his head firmly on his shoulders. Have a look at his very first interview since he was named CEO:
