Deemed as the “World’s thinnest smartphone“, Gionee Elife S5.5 has been launched in India for Rs.22999, and will be available from April 27. As the name suggests, the smartphone comes with an ultra-thin chassis of just 5.5mm, and weighs around 130g which makes it extremely light as well, considering it’s a 5-inch smartphone.

Encased in a 5.5mm-thin metal frame, the Gionee Elife S5.5 packs a MediaTek MT6592 eight-core 1.7GHz processor, a 2,300mAh battery and a 5-inch full-HD (1,920×1,080 pixels) Super AMOLED display. Also included are 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It’s incredible that the company has managed to squeeze in so much into such a thin chassis as this. The phone beats Vivo X3 as the slimmest smartphone in the world for now.

The Elife S5.5 packs in a 13-megapixel rear camera supplemented with a 5-megapixel snapper at the front. It runs on the old Android 4.2 Jelly Bean wrapped under the company’s Amigo UI. Connectivity options include BlueTooth LE 4.0 and Wi-Fi. There’s no expandable microSD slot.

The build quality is awesome and feels great to hold in hand. But the first time you hold it, the lightness of the phone might make you feel like holding a toy, a feeling I had similar to what I experienced with iPhone 5, back in the day. The back of the phone is all glass (like the Xperia Z series) and is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass. The metal frame on the sides doubles up as the antenna.

Gionee says the Elife S series is aimed at fashion oriented youth who likes to flaunt their smartphone as a fashion accessory. The Elife S5.5 surely ticks most of these requirements.

megafon What we think of this
The Gionee Elife S5.5 is all about the looks. The phone looks stunning with 98% metal+glass (and just 2% plastic), and has sexy written all over it. At Rs.23k, the pricing looks right as well. Sadly, the phone won’t be available for a month from now. Considering the fast growing smartphone market these days, it’s not even certain that this phone will hold the coveted title till then.
