Released in March 2014, the HTC One M8 is one of the newest smartphones from the Taiwanese company. Being not just a very good-looking device, it also comes with amazing hardware, such as its Super LCD3 capacitive touchscreen protected with Gorilla Glass 3 and the 3G/4G networks available. If you’re a photography fanatic, you should know that this HTC also comes with a wide-angle 5 MP camera in the front and a 4 MP Ultrapixel camera at the back, both of them being top notch for taking pictures, and recording videos.
If you’re a proud owner of this new phone, we’re sure you’re having a lot of fun learning how to use it. It certainly is great getting a new smartphone, but it’s also easy to miss some of its most interesting features if you don’t know where to look for them. For those of you who are first-time HTC users, as well as anyone who wants to know more about this phone, we recommend reading the following tips and tricks.
How to change themes on HTC One M8?
If you tend to get bored of your HomeScreen’s look pretty easily, the new HTC has something more to offer than its ancestors. It allows users to change the theme from blue or green to red and purple with a few simple settings.
All it needs to be done is to go to the Main Menu and open the Settings folder. There, you will have to look for the Personalize tab, and then hit Themes to see the available options. You can scroll down through the various themes, and once you decide, click Apply to use it.
How to take calls from the lockscreen
Many phones nowadays, no matter how “smart” they are, tend to ask you to unlock your screen first if you want to take calls. The HTC One M8 can do the same for you in case you want to check who’s calling before taking their call. In this case, you should swipe down on the screen when you decide to pick up.
However, if you’d like to skip unlocking your screen, you can do so by changing your settings. Go to the Menu of the device and select Settings. Scroll down to Call and check the box corresponding to Auto Answer Call.
How to use lock screen shortcuts
Sometimes you may be in a hurry, and not have enough time to open the menu and look for your favorite app. If you want to have quick access to everything you need, this phone lets you open most essentials directly from the lock screen.
In order to make this happen, open the Menu and click Personalize, and then go to the Display Tab. This one will let you scroll down to Lock Screen Shortcuts, where you can tap Change Lock Screen Shortcuts. It’s easy to click on any shortcut you’d like to change, or choose another one to replace it. Once you’re done changing it, you can tap Done, and see the results.
How to customize BlinkFeed
Compared to previous phones from HTC, this one made some changes to Blink Feed, too. Being a newsfeed at its core, it gathers information from social media, TV channels, newspapers – all adapted to your preference. This means you can customize this field as much as you wish so you can receive the kind of news that appeal to you.
Similarly, if you want to change the look of Blink Feed, you can go to Settings, Personalize, and select Theme. This will allow you to change the theme for anything you’d like. If you don’t want to see BlinkFeed every time you unlock the phone, you can change that, too. Simply go to Manage Home Screen panel, select the one you’d like to see instead and click to Set as Home.
Quick access to camera
Many phones have a special button for getting the camera started. The HTC One M8 doesn’t have that, but it still makes access to the camera easy. If you don’t want to have to unlock the phone, enter the password, and look for the app, there is a simpler way.
You can just turn the device sideways – in landscape view – and press one of the Volume keys until you see the camera pop up. There is no need to worry about the pictures you have in stock because access to your files won’t be aloud unless the screen is unlocked.
How to edit your home screen
Another good news about the HTC M8 is the fact that you can customize the home screen to make it look just the way you want. You may need to have Facebook nearby, or Twitter on the right, because that’s how you used to have it on your previous phone – all of this can be arranged.
To start moving the different panels around, you have to pinch the screen with your fingers the way you do with a picture you’d like to zoom. This way, you will be shown all the available widgets, and you can start repositioning them as you wish.
Use it as a TV remote control
Thanks to the HTC TV application, you can use your mobile phone to control mostly any brand of TVs. The setup process is very easy –
Once you’re using the application, all you should do is follow the instructions as shown. Being very user-friendly and well-designed, this one is able to guide you through the procedure. It can even control a few other A/V gear, such as receivers, so get ready to have fun using this tool!
Do Not Disturb Mode
If you’re at work, reading your favorite book, watching TV, or simply having a good time you don’t want to be distracted from, you might not want your phone to be beeping. In such cases, you usually turn it off, set it to use vibrations instead of sounds, or depending on the model you own, you can even set it to be silent.
With the HTC One M8, you can opt for the Do Not Disturb mode in order to stop receiving all sorts of alerts. All sounds coming from calls, texts, or notifications will be turned on. To use this mode, you have to go to Settings, and select Sounds. This option will be part of the list, and easy to spot. It is also very flexible, allowing you to select certain contacts that you’d like to keep on receiving calls/texts from.
How to make the most of the icon tray
Most phones will have a standard apps tray placed at the bottom of the screen – you can’t change it, you can’t remove it, and you can’t see it when the phone is locked. If you own an HTC One M8, you can see this tray at any time, so in case you missed some notifications, you can easily access them by clicking on the corresponding icon.
On top of that, if you’d like to take advantage of all you can do with this new phone, you can make the tray even more convenient. By simply dragging and dropping app folders to it, you can get even more notifications.
How to see the battery percentage
It’s important to know how much battery you have left! However, it’s not always visible without unlocking the device. To make sure you see it in time, rather than discover your phone has switched off by itself, you can make it appear in your status bar.
To do this, go to the Settings folder, and scroll to Power. Out of the variety of options available there, you should check the box that corresponds to Show Battery Level. It’s a very useful feature to have, so don’t hesitate too much before starting to use it!
