As rumored in the recent past, Apple has quietly introduced a new 21.5″ model of iMac in the US. This one now becomes the base model at $1099 and carries a lower specced processor. The new 21.5″ iMac features a 1.4 GHz dual-core i5 CPU and just 500GB of Hard disk space.

The previous base model is now the mid-range model and continues to be priced at $1299. It features a 2.7 GHz quad-core i5 CPU along with Intel Iris Pro graphics. The graphics card on the newer base model is also reduced to Intel HD Graphics 5000. Other hardware seems to be the same.

Customers can upgrade these internals to include a 1TB hard drive or a 1TB fusion drive or 256GB of flash storage. Other specs include 1,920 x 1,080-pixel LED display, 8 gigabytes of RAM, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 5,400rpm hard disk drive.

If you are one of those who were hoping for Apple to offer discounts on the base version of the 21.5″ iMac, be sure to check out this new model. But then, it’s priced just $200 less than the previous version, which for us, still looks better value for money, considering the faster processor and bigger storage space. The new iMac is available for purchase right away and will be shipped within 24 hours.

Update: In India, this new model of iMac will be sold starting from Rs.79,900 (inclusive of VAT), and will be available through select Apple authorised resellers starting today.
