Normally, you wouldn’t associate the term ‘Apple’ with ‘torrents’, mainly because of the company’s strict rules in this matter. However, there are tools that you can use with Apple’s products to download or to stream torrents. TorrenTV is that kind of tool, a cross-platform movie streaming app that allows people to stream torrents directly to Apple TV.

This is an open source application that comes with a simple drag and drop torrent interface and also supports streaming of previously downloaded videos. This might sound similar, as we have previously covered Popcorn Time, one of the first apps to offer a stylish user interface and an effective way to stream torrents in the same time.

While it’s similar with certain features, TorrenTV allows people to add their own torrents and stream these directly to an Apple TV. TorrenTV developer Carlos told TorrentFreak the following:

“Popcorn Time is beautiful in code and in looks but I wanted to do two things that PopcornTime didn’t allow me, watch movies directly on my TV and add new torrents which Popcorn Time doesn’t have yet”

TorrenTV works by simply dropping a torrent or magnet link into it. After that, the video file starts downloading and via Airplay it can be streamed directly to an Apple TV. The new TorrenTV streaming application uses Popcorn Time code and is built on the same Peerflix and torrent-stream libraries.

The developer plans to extend its functionality by adding Chromecast and Roku support in the future, as it’s currently available only for Apple TV users. When compared to Popcorn Time, TorrenTV comes with the downside of not offering an index of movies. However, the developer says it’s a good thing, since if there is no index of pirated content it can’t be taken down by the MPAA, which is what happened to Popcorn Time initially.

TorrenTV is available for Mac, Windows and Linux and can be downloaded from the official site by following this link.
