At an event in Beijing yesterday, Xiaomi has detailed its new version of MIUI OS, called MIUI 6. This latest software version will go in to beta-testing today which will continue until October, when select Xiaomi smartphones are said to be getting the final version. The launch of MIUI 6 actually coincides with the fourth anniversary of MIUI, and it brings a number of important improvements and optimizations to accomodate with its flatter design.

According to Xiaomi, MIUI has removed unnecessary distractions from the UI, which should help the user focus on the area that he needs at a specific moment. So, if you’re looking to join the growing base of Xiaomi users and you don’t mind standing accused of owning a smartphone with a software highly resembling to Apple’s iOS, let’s have a look at some of the most important changes.

Changes on the home-screen

The launcher of the new MIUI v6 version now supports batch organisation of icons and includes a quick search panel, which is accessible by a swipe-up gesture. The Calendar, Calculator, Weather, Compass, Clock and other native apps have been refreshed with a new flatter design. The notification center has been revamped, as these are visible on the lock-screen, collapsed by default but expandable with a small gesture.

Improvements to Mi Cloud


With the updated Mi Cloud application, you can now access your photos,contacts, messages, call logs and more from anywhere. There’s 10 GB of free storage and seamless synchronization of all your content on Mi Phone, Mi Pad, Mi TV and more. You can now back up your photos over Wi-Fi. It’s also possible to share your content with your friends and family only.

Performance and security improvements

The new MIUI 6 comes with more power-saving modes in order to adjust the standby time of your device. Various Linux kernel and RAM optimization techniques have also been deployed, making apps run more efficiently. The operating system comes with the right tools to protect against malicious apps and viruses.

It also comes with built-in permission which prevent unauthorized apps from accessing your data. The Virus Scan helps you check and kill viruses before installing any app. The software also comes with Clean Master cleaner app, which is built-in for freeing up storage, to boost memory, enhance speed, and provide extra security. The Data Usage tool monitors your network traffic and saves data.

Changes to Dial Pad, Email, Browser, Gallery and Camera

The basic contact and dial pad function has been revamped and you can now identify, mark or block unwanted calls with several detailed options. Email functionality has been made better, as you can now combine all mails with the same subject into one folder, and you can see what’s new in a single shot. Also, the attachment list allows users to view and save attachments directly.

The Browser feature has been given a slight revampe, as Mi Cloud now allows you to sync bookmarks MIUI Browser. You can continue browsing on your Mi Pad from where you left off on your Mi Phone. Also, in the above screenshots you can see how the new Gallery and Camera apps look like.

So, we can see that colors play a big part of MIUI 6, and many apps appear to have white or grey accents, colored in red, orange and a spectrum of other colors, which makes Xiaomi’s latest software version seem very similar to Apple’s iOS operating system.
