The game is on! Just a couple of days after Xiaomi announced suspension of sales of the Mi 3 smartphones in India, Taiwanese giant, Asus, has sent out a press release reiterating their commitment to support and sell all the phones in the Zenfone series in the Indian market.
The statement to the press starts off like this
With few brands discontinuing with the products in short span, leaving users displeased; ASUS today announced that Zenfone Series will continue to be available.
This is a direct take on Xiaomi, which has managed to garner considerable backlash from consumers and fans in India for their decision to suspend sales of Mi 3 while they focus on the Redmi 1S sales in India. This includes prospective buyers of Mi3 who have been trying to get their hands on the phone for a long time, and also those who have already managed to buy one of the 95,000+ units of the Mi 3.
We aspire to be amongst top 5 vendors
Asus India has also made its intentions clear. “The company also stated that it aims to be one of the top 5 vendors in India by 2015”. Although it’s widely known in PC and tablets segments in India, Asus is a relatively new entrant, much like Xiaomi, in the Indian smartphone segment. The Zenfone range of smartphones have had decent success in the highly competitive mid-range and low-end smartphone markets in India. The Zenfone 5 and the Zenfone 4 have been well received by the Indian consumers, although Xiaomi has managed to garner more press.
Asus announced that the company has sold over 1 lakh smartphones since its launch on July 9 in one-and-a-half months. The 4.5-inch version of Zenfone 4 is expected to launch very soon, and directly takes on Xiaomi’s Redmi 1S at this price point.
ASUS is premeditated to proceed as per the understanding of what users are thinking, feeling, and doing – what they value. It is essential for the company to attain the disposition that they start with people and comprehend their expectations from ASUS. In view of the phenomenal response from the Indian market, the company will continue to strive to create an effortless and joyful digital life for everyone
As we found out in our review of the Zenfone 5, Asus has done well to bring a high performing phone at a competitive price. Although it lacks the specs of Xiaomi Mi 3, we found that it’s a worthy alternative, specially in absence of the Mi 3. Xiaomi has said that suspension of Mi 3 is only temporary and might come back after a few weeks.
Asus is trying to thrive on the backlash garnered by Xiaomi with its unpopular decision. Will that work? We shall find out in coming days!
