Apple has just unveiled its latest generation smartphones, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus at a mega launch event in San Francisco. The phone goes on sale in the US and eight other countries on September 19th, but Indian fans need not fret as both the phones will go on sale in India, starting September 26th, just a week after the global launch!
Update: Cancel that. Apple has just pushed the launch date from Sep 26th to Oct 17th. That’s sad, but not too bad.
Update 2: Two days since, Apple has removed any information related to the availability of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in India. Heartbreaking.
Apple has always been accused of not taking Indian market seriously. Apple didn’t even bother to launch its first iPhone here, and then, when they introduced the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, they were almost at the fag end of the release cycle, and were rightly accused of using Indian market as the dumping ground for their unsold inventory. Things have changed tremendously, and we will be seeing both the iPhone 6 models being launched within a week of the global launch!
The iPhone 6 comes in two variants – 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch. Both of them carry a new design, which is exactly same as those leaks we encountered in the recent past. Both of them are powered by the Apple A8 chip with second generation 64-bit desktop-class architecture, and run the latest iOS 8. Both smartphones also feature an improved 8-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and 1.5µ pixels sensor, optical image stabilization, and true tone flash, and a 1.2-megapixel Facetime camera at the front. Both the smartphones are available in three storage variants — 16GB, 64GB and 128GB.
Apple India’s iPhone page has already been updated to indicate the availability of iPhone 6 in India. Airtel and Aircel are listed as the official resellers. Sadly, there are no pricing details available yet. Just for the reference, an unlocked iPhone 6 (16GB) starts at $649 in the US, while the iPhone 6 Plus (16GB) starts at $749. Going by Apple’s pricing math, the iPhone 6 should start at around Rs.49,999 and the iPhone 6 Plus should start around Rs.55,999. But then, a lot would depend on the USD to INR conversion rates applied.
Last year, when iPhone 5S was released, it was priced at Rs.53,500 in India. At that time, USD to INR conversion was around Rs.65, and it has dropped considerably now. So we are expecting slightly better pricing. We should wait for the official press release for the exact details.[H/T: Sachin]
