Canadian company BlackBerry had recently announced its flagship smartphone, the Passport (along with the new BlackBerry Blend service) and we had published an extensive piece covering all its features and specs. Now, the device has been officially announced for the Indian market, having a price of Rs 49,990. This is the equivalent of $812, which is more expensive by $213 than its unlocked price in USA and Canada.

We already had the chance to play a little with the smartphone, so check out our first impressions of the device. The smartphone will be available for pre-order starting today at BlackBerry exclusive stores and Amazon.in. If you book the BlackBerry Passport between today and October 10, you will also get a Rs 5000 gift voucher on Amazon.in as well as 5,000 frequent flyer miles on Jet Airways.

As you already know, it comes with an unusual  shape of a closed passport, sporting a large square 4.5 inch touchscreen along with a innovative keyboard. The reworked BlackBerry Keyboard feature contextual auto-correction, next-word prediction and a learning engine that gets to know the way users type. Here are some other main specs of the device:

  • 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 GPU
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB internal storage and a removable microSD memory card slot which offers support for up to 128 GB
  • 3,450mAh integrated non-removable battery
  • 13MP rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), 5-element f2.0 lens, Back Side Illumination, LED flash and support for 1080p HD video recording at 60fps
  • 2MP fixed-focus front-facing camera that supports 720p video capture
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (LE), GPS and NFC

The Passport runs BlackBerry’s latest BlackBerry 10.3 operating system and also comes with a virtual assistant that is able to help owners both via written and verbal methods of communication. Thanks to its partnership with Amazon, Passport users will be able to download android apps from Amazon’s app store.
