A while back, we shared some of the best math apps that you could use on your iPhone, iPad or Android to help you with your homework. And it looks that it’s time to add a new one to the list, which might as well be the best out there for many of you.
PhotoMath is a fresh free app for iOS and Windows Phone which is described as the world’s first smart camera calculator. Initially unveiled for Windows Phone devices, the app is now available on iOS, as well, with Android due in early 2015. It’s a little weird why they have decided to go this way, but perhaps it was easier to develop on Windows Phone, who knows.
Long story cut short, PhotoMath uses your smartphone’s camera to scan math equations and solve them, but it will also show you the steps involved. Yes, the first thought that comes to mind is this – pupils will use this as just another way to cheat or to get homework done easily. Even if it shows you how to solve equations, this eliminates the whole process of having to think for a solution.
Nonetheless, this remains a great tool to educate users on how to solve math problems. At the moment, the app can solve arithmetic expressions, fractions and decimals, powers and roots and simple linear equations, with more to be added in the future. The single drawback is perhaps the fact that handwritten text is not currently supported, only printed problems from Math textbooks.
