Some phones are known for their cameras, some for their price, and some for their design. The Gionee Elife S5.1 is known for its slim & sexy looks, and we unboxed this beautiful device which was just launched in India at Rs.19,899. Gionee’s S series is known for its style quotient and the S5.1 takes it to a new level altogether.

Succeeding the Elife S5.5, the Gionee S5.1 is just 5.15mm thick, and was known as the slimmest smartphone in the world when it was announced few weeks back. By the time it was released in India, Oppo had stole its thunder with Oppo R5, a 4.5mm phone which is so thin that it can’t accommodate a 3.5mm audio jack. No such compromises on the Elife S5.1 though.

As always, Gionee has bundled a lot of stuff inside the package. The packaging design is very similar to the Elife S5.5 and comes in a thin and tall box. Inside the box, you’d be greeted by a free faux-leather flip case inside which you’ll find the slim & sexy S5.1 smartphone. The flip case looks premium on first look, but it’s not. But then, it’s a free case, so you can’t complain much! In addition to the usual stuff like AC adapter, data cable and in-ear headphones, Gionee has bundled a couple of screen protectors, a free transparent TPU case, a SIM ejector tool and a free USB-OTG cable. No one else really bother to pack in so many goodies!

Talking about the Gionee S5.1, the phone feels extremely thin and light to hold. It weighs less than 100 grams (97g to be exact) and that’s extremely light for a smartphone these days. Both the front and back of S5.1 is made of glass and covered with Corning Gorilla glass protection. The side is made of metal with chamfered edges, which gives it an iPhone 4S like looks. The edges are more curved like the iPhone 6 and that’s not a bad thing.

The first thing anyone would notice on holding the S5.1 is its weightlessness. The phone feels anorexic and makes it uncomfortable to hold. The glass back makes it worse by being slippery and you’d feel like using the free flip case or the TPU case included within the package for that extra grip, which is kind of ironic and defeats the purpose. If you dare to use it bare, you are bound to get second looks from people around.

Although I feel it’s misplaced priorities from OEMs to sacrifice battery life and usability in order to make the phones slimmer, I can’t help but to applaud the engineering that goes behind this. A 5.15mm chassis houses a 2050mAh battery, an octal-core MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. Mind-blowing! The 4.8-inch AMOLED screen has just HD (720p) resolution, but you’ll be hard pressed to notice any pixels on that vibrant and sharp display.

The first impressions are majorly positive. The Elife S5.1 will inevitably increase your style quotient by leaps and bounds thanks to its slim chassis and beautiful design. The display is sharp and vibrant, and Amigo UI is colorful and pleasing to the eyes. The challenge however is how well the Mediatek octa-core processor with 1GB of RAM performs and how the 2050mAh battery holds up the juice. We shall be back with a detailed review soon. If you have any questions, do let us know through the comments section and we shall be happy to answer them in our upcoming review.
