Just like many out there, I am one of those persons who can’t go to sleep unless it’s total silence around me. Which, sometimes, makes it so hard to fall asleep. It’s either the neighbors or my family in other rooms, so in many situations in have to resort to earplugs or listening to music in order to fall asleep. But they can be problematic, as the earplugs don’t offer the best noise protection and the music, as soothing as it can be, comes from my earphones that sometimes can be annoying.
But luckily there are smart engineers out there who are making use of crowdfunding websites to help achieve their goals. Such is the case with Hush, being touted as the world’s first smart earplugs. These innovative earplugs are described as wireless noise masking earplugs that block out the world while still letting you hear the things that matter most. You can get a pair for $115 on Kickstarter, with slightly more than a week still left to go from the campaign.
Hush makes use of sound eliminating foam with noise masking to help isolate you from your surrounding environment. But it also connects wirelessly with your smartphone, so that you can still receive important notifications, if you so choose. While these smart earplugs are mainly designed for a better sleep, you can use them while flying or travelling for a few good hours.
Since we’re speaking about such a small device that needs to be smart, battery was a potential concern. The team has addressed this by using Bluetooth Low Energy and playing back locally stored audio files. At the moment, Hush has two mobile apps for iOS and Android users that you can use to set up an alarm. And what’s really cool is that only you will hear it, so your partner won’t be bothered by it.
Hush can also play soothing sounds to help you fall asleep faster. Right now, it is able to play the following sounds: White Noise, Brown Noise, Pink Noise, Ocean Waves, Rainfall, Fan, Crackling Fire, Babbling Brook, Waterfall and Thunderstorm. There’s even a Hush Tracker feature that allows you to track your smart earplugs through the app and make them sound to find them.
You house the earplugs in the Hush Case which has its own rechargeable batteries that can recharge Hush up to 10 times without plugging in. There’s also an extra USB port on the case so that you can charge Hush and your phone at the same time. At the time of writing this, the Hush team has managed to gather more than $466,000, with 11 days still left to go.
