Microsoft has announced its first ever non-Nokia Lumia device a few weeks back – the Lumia 535 Windows Phone smartphone. Now the company is unveiling its most affordable Windows Pone handset yet – the Lumia 435 along with another affordable new model – the Lumia 532. The cheapest one gets announced at a price of 69 euros (81$) with the second being available for 79 euros ($93).
Jo Harlow, corporate vice president for phones at Microsoft, said the following:
With the Lumia 435 and Lumia 532, we’ve realized our goal of creating the most affordable Lumia devices to date, opening up the opportunity to reach those people who are buying a smartphone for the very first time. Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 deliver competitive hardware alongside innovative software that will continue to receive the very latest updates and enhancements, keeping users up-to-date with the best new features.
Being offered at such low price-points means the Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 will score well among pre-paid smartphone users but also with contract buyers, since they will most likely be offered for free, basically. Microsoft says both smartphones will be available starting next month, being targeted at select markets in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, and the Middle East. Now let’s have a look at their specs and features.
Microsoft Lumia 532
- 4-inch display with a resolution of 480 by 800
- 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor
- 1 GB of RAM
- 5 MP main camera with a 0.3 MP secondary one
- 1,560 mAh battery
- 8 GB of internal storage with microSD card slot support up to 128 GB
- Wi-Fi 802.11n
- 11.6 mm thick and weighs 136.3 grams
- Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim enhancements, Glance Screen functionality
- Special camera back-up feature which brings 30GB of free cloud storage on Microsoft OneDrive
On paper, Lumia 532 looks like the proper successor to Lumia 520. It fixes the latter’s main shortcomings — 512 MB of RAM, no front-facing camera, and no Glance Screen support — while retaining some of its stronger features — like 8 GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, non-intimidating size, and capacitive keys. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of Lumia 520 users will choose Lumia 532 come upgrade time (and assuming they do not want to or cannot afford to opt for a better model in the range).
Microsoft Lumia 435
- 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor
- 2 MP main camera
- 11.7 mm thick and weighs 134.1 grams
- 1560 mAh battery
- 1GB of RAM
- 8GB of memory expandable up to 128GB with micro-SD support
Microsoft Office will also be available pre-loaded on the devices. Lumia 532 is obviously the better phone of the two, and if you’re looking for a budget phone or a secondary one, maybe you could invest a little more and get the better-specced one. Both devices will be available in single-SIM as well as dual-SIM versions. The handsets are being offered in standard black and white options along with bright orange and green.
