Android One is still in its nascent stage and Google has a lot of work to do until it becomes a really solid program for budget buyers. But if you have already bought an Android One device and you’re living in India, then you were perhaps looking with envy at customers from Indonesia and the Philippines who got the fresh Android 5.1 upgrade with their purchase.
But now there’s reason to rejoice for Indian customers as well, because Android 5.0 Lollipop has started rolling out to them, as well. So, if you have bought a Karbonn Sparkle V, Micromax Canvas A1, or Spice Dream UNO, then you should be happy to know that Lollipop could be only a few days (or weeks) away from you. Caesar Sengupta, Product Management Director at Google, said the following on his official Google Plus account:
We’ve already started rolling out Lollipop to a small number of phones in India. This is a gradual process and so each week we’ll push the OTA update to more phones selected at random (pro-tip: connecting over WiFi will increase your odds). We thank you again for your patience, and please stay tuned for further updates.
However, unfortunately, it hasn’t been mentioned when exactly the Lollipop roll-out will be complete. As Sengupta says, being connected to a Wi-Fi network improves your chances of being picked, but it’s indeed a bit frustrating not to know for sure. Also, there’s a chance that Android One users will get the most recent Android 5.1 update, but that remains to be seen.
Also, if you will purchase a new Android One devices right now in India, then you will be getting only Android 4.4 KitKat. And this will most likely stay like that until stocks will be depleted. Google could see a rise in sales once it will start putting on shelves devices featuring Android Lollipop out-of-the-box.
