A while back, we told you about Opera’s Sponsored Web Pass, a free mobile data package offered to operator subscribers just for the cost of seeing some advertisements. That feature was focusing on users from emerging markets, and now Opera is introducing App Pass to Opera Max, another option meant to help novice mobile Internet users.

With the new App Pass feature, Opera is looking to allow telecom operators to offer subscribers free access to selected apps. Opera Max with App Pass works with any browser or mobile app, which is really a step forward. Telenor carrier is said to be the first partner with Opera and launch Opera Max with App Pass. Rolv-Erik Spilling, Head of Telenor Digital, said the following:

We’re eager to see how this service is received in our markets. App Pass is designed to give customers easy control over costs related to data usage. The challenge of so-called ‘bill shock’ is high on our agenda, and these kinds of initiatives from Opera play an important part in addressing the issue

App Pass will contain a selection of apps that users can access without any data charges. Opera also says it will introduce sponsored App Passes and a priced feature which will allow users to pay a flat fee to access a bundle of apps. Opera also said that OEMs like Samsung and Micromax have already agreed to pre-load App Pass on upcoming products.
