A while back, we believed that the OnePlus 2 was scheduled to be unveiled sometime towards the end of the third quarter of this year, but now we know for sure that the device will be launched much sooner.

OnePlus has now made it official that the OnePlus 2 will be launched on July 27 (7PM PT), saying that this is going to be the world’s first product launch in VR. The Chinese company claims that we will ‘be able to experience it in virtual reality,’ suggesting that product launches are quite dull and repetitive. Here’s how OnePlus plans to change that with the launch of its upcoming smartphone:

A VR launch lets you stand right next to our team and our fans as we unveil our new flagship. You’ll be able to look around as you check out the phone in a new way and maybe even find a few hidden Easter eggs. It’s a new way of thinking about a product launch. We aren’t talking at you; we are talking with you.

As it praises the VR concept, OnePlus also said that it will be releasing its own OnePlus Cardboard, as well, and the official webpage implies that it’s going to be made available for free.

The not so great news is that Once the OnePlus 2 is unveiled, you will still need an invite to get one, which is something that’s no longer required for the first-generation. The reason for this is most likely the fact that OnePlus doesn’t have such a complex and mature supply chain as other more established companies, but maybe it will help to wrap the second-generation with an exclusivity veil, as well.

We already know quite a few things about the upcoming device – it’s going to feature Snapdragon 810 SoC and OxygenOS and it will get the newest USB Type-C. Still in the rumor phase are the amount of RAM, its price and the possibility for another design-focused smartphone that will accompany the OnePlus 2.
