Chinese manufacturer Oppo has announced the Oppo R5S, an iterative upgrade for its Oppo R5 which was released earlier this year. The extra ‘s’ tag brings in a minor hardware upgrade while retaining the ultra thin 4.85mm body profile. The Oppo R5s is equipped with a 5.2-inch FHD AMOLED display that offers a pixel density of 423ppi along with a protective layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The R5s is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor clocked at 1.5GHz and paired with a 3GB RAM as opposed to the 2GB RAM in the Oppo R5. Storage comes in the form of a 32GB internal memory and an expandable memory card slot. The camera department is handled by a 13-Megapixel primary Sony IMX214 sensor and a 5-Megapixel secondary sensor with a 83-degree wide angled lens.

The device runs on ColorOS 2.0, which is based on the dated Android 4.4 (KitKat). Oppo R5s comes with connectivity options like 4G LTE, 3G , Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and NFC. The device is backed up by a rather minuscule 2000mAh battery bundled with OPPOs VOOC Rapid Charge technology which charges the device from 0 to 75% in just 30 minutes.

Just like the Oppo R5, the R5s has managed to impress us with its razor thin profile, finely chiseled out edges and the top-notch finish of the device. That being said the R5s does inherit same niggles from its predecessor which includes the need to carry a USB to 3.5mm Audio jack adapter. Color OS 2.0 is not even near perfect and the fact that it is based on Android KitKat can make it a deal breaker for some. It’s a known fact that Oppo is lethargic when it comes to providing latest Android updates, so this is no surprise for many of us.

Another concern of ours is the fact that Snapdragon 615 had shown some heating issues in a handful of devices including the Oppo R5 (mostly isolated cases) and we hope the company has managed to sort out the issue whatsoever. The Oppo R5 price tilted slightly to the higher side at Rs. 24,990 and we hope that the R5s will at least be priced at par with its predecessor, since it does not bring about a host of changes that can justify the high pricing. The Oppo R5s will rival the likes of devices like the OnePlus 2 which at almost the same price offer a multitude of class leading features including the fingerprint scanner and a Type-C USB.

The Oppo R5s will come in Grey color and is already listed on the Oppostyle website for 199 Euros, which is only a indicative price and is most likely to increase once the stocks are up for sale.
