Gionee’s much awaited Elife E8 smartphone is all set to launch in India on October 8th in New Delhi. The camera centric phone with a stunning 23.7MP shooter on the rear was unveiled in China back in June this year, and is finally making its foray to other markets starting with India next week. And interestingly, it’s expected to be online exclusive – something we have never seen from Gionee in the past.
The Elife E8 succeeds the Elife E7 which was a pretty big success considering top end specs and an extremely capable camera. The E7 was launched back in December 2013, so it’s very surprising as to why Gionee took nearly 2 years to release the next flagship smartphone.
The Gionee Elife E8 sports a humongous 6-inch display with QHD (1,440 x 2,560) screen resolution. Inside the device sits a 64-bit capable MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core chipset clocked at 2GHz paired with 3GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage which can be expanded to add another 128GB via microSD card should you need more storage.
As with any phone in the E series the E8’s highlight will be its 23.7MP camera with real-time lossless zoom which is capable of recording videos at 4K resolution. On the front, there is an 8-megapixel shooter that should take decent selfies. Other features include a fingerprint sensor which is placed at the back. To address the concerning amount of energy its QHD display will drain, the company is packing a 3,500mAh battery in the phone.
On the software front, the Elife E8 will run on Android 5.1 Lollipop with Gionee’s own Amigo UI 3.1 on top of it. Rather surprisingly, the phone was priced at 3999 RMB (~$630) at its launch in China, which roughly translates to Rs 41,000 in India – a rather high price for a Gionee phone. But we expect the phone to be priced around Rs 35,000 considering the price sensitive Indian smartphone market. [Update: Their teaser ‘Block Your Date’ invite hints at an online exclusive deal, which should help Gionee to further reduce the price]
With the festive season kicking in, many companies are launching their flagships in India, including Apple and Samsung. Gionee will be banking on the camera to make a dent in the market with the Elife E8. With some really capable cameras at Rs 25k range in form of OnePlus 2 and Lenovo Vibe Shot, Gionee will have its hands full to get people spend more for the E8. But if the phone manages to truly emulate and better what it achieved with the Elife E7, it might well find itself in the consideration list of many people. Stay tuned as we bring the pricing details and eventually the review of Gionee Elife E8 in coming days.
