YU had us all waiting for the Yutopia launch on the 7th of December but due to some unspecified reasons they pushed back the release date to today. So here it is – the most expensive and the powerful smartphone from the YU stables, the Yutopia has been launched in India priced at Rs 24,999 (same as OnePlus 2). The Yutopia comes clad in a metal body made of aircraft grade aluminium, which ironically is the same material used in the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Display and Processor
The Yutopia starts scoring brownie points right away thanks to its 5.2-inch WQHD display that bosts of a staggering 565ppi of pixel density. The W in the WQHD stands for “Wide”, which points out at the 16:9 aspect ratio. The Real RGB ensures a better and more natural color reproduction than its predecessor. The display also comes with a layer of OGS and full lamination which will ultimately aid in better sun light readability. Rounding off is the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection on top.
Under the hood lies the mighty Snapdragon 810 married to a 4GB DDR4 RAM. The Graphic department will be handled bu the Adreno 430 GPU. The best part of the processing unit is that it is based on the ARM big.LITTLE architecture which manages the core and renders the boost only when required thus helping in achieving a greater battery life. It is indeed surprising to see the efficiency with which the big.Little software mitigates the workload to the appropriate CPU core. Yutopia comes with the built in Snapdragon X10 LTE modem.
Storage and Imaging
On the storage front the device offers 32GB of internal storage along with a microSD card that can accommodate 128GB more. Much to the shutterbugs delight, the Yutopia features a 21-Megapixel primary camera sensor (Sony IMX 230) with dual tone flash and a 8-Megapixel secondary sensor. The Wide FOV 86 will find a favourite with the selfies lovers as it will help capture a wider frame angle in short distance. The camera app also offers a Slo-mo HD video recording, 4K Ultra HD Video and a built in 192-point phase-detection to latch the focus on moving objects. The Optical Image Stabilisation will further tick all the boxes when it comes to an ultimate photography experience on the smartphone.
The smartphone will run the latest Cyanogen OS 12.1 built on Android 5.1.1, with Marshmallow dropping anytime soon. The device will be backed by a 3000 mAh high density battery along with QuickCharge 2.0. Just to keep at pace with the other phones the Yutopia also comes with a Fingerprint scanner which can also be used to click selfies.
The Yutopia will be a great buy for people looking out to buy a smartphone with top of the line hardware and yet do not compromise on other innards like the Camera and the software the phone runs on. For Yu apart from the low pricing and the hardware, the inclusion of Cyanogen has always been the silver lining. The phone has already been spotted on the Geekbench after it managed to score a rather impressive 1353 in single-core test and 4622 in the multi core test.
Yutopia will mark the companies foray into an entirely new segment of high powered premium phones with an affordable price tag, a segment that was catered to largely by the OnePlus One. Rahul Sharma, the founder of YU Televentures has been introducing Yutopia as “the most powerful phone on the planet”. Yu has also been involved in taking pots against its competitors like the OnePlus 2 which lacks the NFC and the QuickCharge support.
YU seems to have diligently addressed each and every aspect of the smartphones. Yutopia boasts of a dynamic volume levelling, automatic bass management and adaptive translation. The Adaptive translation will help it pass on the low frequency content to the higher harmonic locations in order to improve the bass. The audio processor also makes use of multiple filters for better performance. Also, it comes bundled with Little Bird earphones by House of Marley.
The Yutopia heralds with the usual set of connectivity features including the Dual SIM 4G support and the USB-C. Hold your horses before you start digging for the sensors Yutopia comes with as YU seems to have baked in all the sensors available into this device. For clarity sake the Yutopia comes with Gyroscope, Electronic compass, Barometer, Fingerprint Sensor, Hall Sensor and flip detection covers.
Pricing and Availability
The registrations for the phone has been already started and YU is claiming to have introduced a new queuing system that will let the buyers buy the phone based on a first come first serve basis. The pre-booking will start at 2PM on December 17th and the device will be shipped on 26th of December. As mentioned before, it’s priced at Rs 24,999 (~$375) and available exclusively on Amazon.in. This won’t be a flash sale, instead, it will be sold on first come first serve basis.
YU has partnered with Airtel to offer double data for six months i.e if you buy a data pack of 1GB every month it will be doubled to 2GB every month for the next six months. The Assured upgrade offer will allow customers to upgrade to the next Yutopia phone with a guaranteed buyback of 40%. Adding to this is the SBI bank offer which offers an additional Rs 1000 cashback on its ATM card EMI transactions.
