Xiaomi has started sending invites to the Indian media for the launch of the hugely anticipated flagship phone, the Mi5. During the Redmi Note 3 launch on March 3, Hugo Barra had announced that the Mi5 will launch within a month, and they have kept the word. The Xiaomi Mi5 will be launching on Thursday, March 31 in New Delhi.
The Mi5 and Mi5 Pro were announced back in February during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and the former eventually went on sale earlier this month in China. The Mi5 Pro is still elusive in the Chinese market so we don’t expect the higher end Mi5 Pro to be made available in India anytime soon.
Xiaomi has been accused of meting out step motherly treatment to Indian consumers with either skipping important smartphone models (like Mi 4c) or bringing out models way after its China release (like Mi4). With Redmi Note 3 and now Mi5, the Chinese company must be hoping to put those allegations to rest. The Mi5 had got a tremendous response in China with over 16 million registrations ahead of its first flash sale. The demand is still strong over there, so the Indian launch attains a bigger significance now.
For the uninitiated, the Xiaomi Mi5 comes in two versions – 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM and 3GB RAM + 64GB ROM. There is also the 4GB RAM + 128GB ROM ceramic back variant called the Mi5 Pro which we don’t think will be coming anytime soon to India. The Mi5 is powered by the powerful Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset and has a 16MP camera at the back with DTI technology, 4-Axis OIS and PDAF along with dual LED flash. On front, there’s a 4MP Ultrapixel camera. The display is of 5.15-inches with 1080p resolution and the battery is of 3000mAh capacity with Quick Charge 3.0. It was announced to come in Black, White, Gold and Rose colors, but don’t be surprised if you get to see just one or two of them initially over here. The phone is priced at 1999 Yuan which roughly translates to Rs 20,500. But what price tag will it carry? We got to wait and see.
