After the fiercely complicated and trending release of Ringing Bells’s Freedom 251, smartphone manufacturers have tried to create headlines based on cheap price tags. As it looks like, we have a new contender in the market, although, this one costs even less than my favorite chocolate. Bengaluru-based Namotel is advertising a smartphone titled “Acche Din” at a price of Rs 99 (roughly USD 1.5) which basically makes it the world’s cheapest phone. Despite, the strings “Namo” and “Acche Din”, we are quite sure India’s prime minister has nothing to do with this.

“Acche Din” will be available for pre-booking starting from May 17th to May 25th on company’s website, however unlike previous offers, this time, you’ll be able to opt for cash on delivery with minimal delivery charges. Unfortunately, and as expected, the website seems to be currently down. Although buying this phone isn’t really straightforward, interested users will have to register on and get an ID and password. Additionally, the buyer will have to pay a one-time lifetime valid membership fee of Rs 199 which brings this whole cheapest phone affair back to square one as there’s no guarantee that this will be a successful launch or just a fraud.

As far as specifications are concerned, Namotel Acche Din (so weird for a smartphone name) flaunts a 4-inch WVGA panel up front, it is powered by an unnamed Quad-core processor clocked at 1.3Ghz along with 1GB of RAM. There’s a 2 Megapixel sensor on the back and a VGA front facing camera. Internal storage is kept at 4GB, thankfully it is expandable up to 32GB via a MicroSD card. The phone supports 3G and Dual-SIM functionality. It runs on a 1325 mAh battery and features an all plastic build. There are two color options available including white and black. However, on the website, it is mentioned that pictures shown here are for illustrations purposes only, so we can’t quite comment on how “Acche Din” looks.

Namotel on their website says –

Joy and freedom represent the logo! The same joy will flourish in billion Indians in the form of smart Connect with (3 different looks and shapes) Android Smart powerful Phone at 99. We make this product to show love for India it is a ‘MAKE IN INDIA’ Initiative. This model is limited and it is applicable only for India and who holds Aadhar Identity.

With a total cost of around Rs 300, Namotel’s attempt to seek attention in the technology industry is nothing but dull. Customers have moved on and those looking for ultra cheap deals like this one won’t understand the process in the first place. According to the website, “Acche Din” was previously priced at Rs 2999 but has received a price cut bringing the cost down to merely Rs 99. Let us wait and watch how this one turns out.
