A month back, the new kid on the block, Smartron debuted with tbook, a 12.2-inch hybrid laptop that came powered with the Intel Core M processor. Now, the company is back with an Android smartphone. The tphone boasts of being the lightest 5.5-inch smartphone and it was launched today by the legendary cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar who is also a stakeholder in the company.
The tphone comes priced at Rs 22,999 and the USP of this product is the sleek design and the concept called Internet of Tron which is aimed at providing an equalized experience across all devices, including the IoT devices. Smartron is aiming to build an ecosystem of smart devices, many of which will launch later this year.
The device comes equipped with a 5.5-inch FHD AMOLED display that is fine tuned to adjust the brightness in bright outdoors and also low light conditions. Under the hood lies the infamous Snapdragon 810 clocked at 2 GHz and mated with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM. On the imaging front, the phone offers a 13-Megapixel primary sensor with 6-elements lens, zero shutter lag, F/2.0 aperture and PDAF autofocus. The secondary sensor shapes up as a 4-Megapixel unit with large 2µm pixel size. The larger pixel size translates to better lit selfies in low light conditions.
On the memory front, tphone offers a 64GB Internal storage along with an Hybrid SIM slot that can accomdate a microSD card. Additionally, Smartron also claims to have given unlimited storage in the form of t.cloud. Other services by Smartron includes tare – anytime anywhere service and also a personalized one-stop device and accessory store called the tstore.
The tphone maintains a rather thin profile of 7mm even after packing a 3000mAh battery pack. The dual color treatment adds a dash of elegance and it is kind of refreshing to see someone offering a diversified color palette. The tphone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and we are still not sure if its a complete stock Android version or if Smartron has its own overlay.
Smartron has managed to fit in the usual bunch of connectivity features in tphone including Hybrid Dual SIM, Fast charging 2.0, USB Type-C and VoLTE support. Much to the delight of audiophiles, the tphone comes with DTS premium sound and DTS PlayFI four mic setup with noise cancellation.
At Rs 22,999 it takes on the likes of Xiaomi Mi 5, OnePlus 2 and Lenovo Vibe X3. For a new brand, that’s a slightly higher price to ask, specially considering the processor. But then, Smartron is promising a good overall experience, so we would wait and watch how well it fares in our detailed review. Stay tuned for that.
