Google had earlier introduced a Ride Service option that allowed users to book cab within the Google Maps and since then they have added new ride options globally. Now Google has announced an updated Ride service that is expected to be more intuitive in nature and will integrate the third party apps into the Google Maps.
The update will also offer more ride options along with the associated information. By tapping on your preferred cab hailing service one could see a brief which includes the ride estimate and special offers if any. As you can see in the screenshots below, the ride service menu used to hide the map display but with the new update, one would be able to access the maps and the services in a single menu. The users can also check if a cab is available in the vicinity by selecting the option from the carousel menu.
Google has also changed the way one books a cab from the Google Maps, earlier the maps would eventually open up the app in order to complete the booking process, but now that has changed. Once you have signed in with your preferred app lets say Uber you can complete the entire booking process from the Google Maps. What this means is that you can book a cab from Google Maps even if you don’t have Uber installed on your smartphone. Moreover, all the information that is needed by the user is displayed within the Maps.
In the recent past, Google Maps has added a slew of services including booking table at a nearby restaurant, booking fitness class and also showing up information on how crowded a place is in real-time. Google Maps is slowly manifesting into a one-stop shop for your travel or commuting needs and needless to say the Mountain View company will add more of such features. As of now, we install an app for every service we intend to use but in the near future, this may change as services like Google Maps will allow for complete integration of apps including Uber, Lyft and other regional players like Ola in India.
