Sony has extended its XA series with the launch of new XA1, and XA1 Ultra smartphones at the Mobile World Congress. The new mid-range phones feature striking edge-to-edge displays up front and come with 23MP rear cameras. Neither of the phones is water resistant and flaunt an all-glass build.

First off, the Xperia XA1 comes with an edge-to-edge 5-inch HD panel and is powered by MediaTek’s Helio P20 octa-core chipset. There’s 3GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage which can be expanded via the MicroSD card slot up to 256GB, and a rather tiny, 2300mAh battery. On the rear, you’ll find a 23MP ISO6400 sensor with a 24mm (equiv.) f/2.0 lens, Hybrid AF, and on the front, an 8MP shooter. Unfortunately, it can’t shoot 4K videos. For software, Sony has preloaded Android Nougat and surprisingly, Sony has decided to opt for a MicroUSB port instead of USB Type-C. It will be available in three color options – White, Black, Gold and (outside of Europe) Pink for a price of $299.99, sales for which begin in late April or early May.

The beefier, Xperia XA1 Ultra, on the other hand, has a 6-inch Full HD screen, and it runs on the same MediaTek Helio P20 processor backed up by 4GB of RAM. There are two storage options – 32GB or 64GB with support for MicroSD expansion as well. Furthermore, it comes with a larger 2700mAh battery with Pump Express+ 2.0 compatibility (MediaTek’s take on fast charging) and a USB Type-C slot.

It rocks the same rear camera setup found on the smaller XA1, however, the front-facing shooter is significantly better here. The XA1 Ultra includes a 16MP selfie camera, Optical Image Stabilization, and a front-facing LED flash. Pricing and availability for the XA1 Ultra haven’t been announced yet, however, it will be launched sometime in Spring in three color options – White, Black, Pink, and Gold. Thankfully, Sony too hasn’t decided to drop the regular headphone jack just yet.
