Even as the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi and Nubia mercilessly hack away at the bezels surrounding a display, some doctors are claiming that the absence of bezels on a display might actually be detrimental to human vision.
The news is likely to send some panic bells ringing in phone manufacturer camps, especially when you consider that Samsung and Xiaomi highlighted the absence of bezels in their Galaxy S8 and Mi Mix models. Indeed, most of the brands have been telling us that the increased space given to displays would result in a much better viewing experience as you have simply more screen to view!
Well, maybe not.
For as per some doctors, the absence of bezels might actually result in damage to the viewer’s eyes. The absence of a border to frame content, they say, can result in not having a suitable contrast which would in simple terms, reduce the user to viewing content without a context. “It is like a picture hanging in the middle of nowhere, no strings, no connections, nothing around it. It can be visually distressing and might even cause mental trauma,” said Dr PK Murkhji, of Fibbere Optics and Opticals Limited, a Texas-based firm that specializes in matters relating to human visuals. The firm is planning to hold meetings with smartphone manufacturers in an attempt to convince them of the dangers inherent in zero bezel displays in the coming days.
The doctor also expressed concern that even though tech reviewers had spotted problems with the displays, they had actually attempted to cover them up rather than highlight them, thus ignoring the discomfort that could be caused to users in the long run. “This is grossly irresponsible journalism, and if I were to invoke what Donald Trump says – almost like false news,” he complains. “I actually read reviewers writing that the display is eye-popping. Now, anyone with even an iota of common sense – he need no be a doctor even – can tell you that popping eyes are not good for visual health. What will you see once your eyes are popped? Look at what happens to corn when it is popped. Imagine what will happen to the human eye when it has to undergo the same transition thanks to these zero bezel displays!”
