OnePlus is discontinuing another flagship smartphone already and this time, it’s their most-recent OnePlus 3T. The company, on their forums today, made the announcement and said that they won’t be restocking it anymore. Hence if you are planning to buy, better be quick. [Update: It will continue to sell in India as per the company’s spokesperson]
OnePlus 3T is one of the highest rated smartphones in the past two quarters and was launched as an incremental update to the original OnePlus 3. Although this doesn’t mean that the company won’t be rolling out any more updates. The handset is expected to consistently receive software updates for the next year or so. However, OnePlus hasn’t explicitly stated about support for Android O. But considering the developer support these products benefit from, we’re sure you won’t be left stranded with an outdated Android version.
Furthermore, OnePlus stated in the post, “A lot has happened since we launched the OnePlus 3T back in November of last year. We were thrilled by the response our device received both in the media and by our users around the world. It’s been far and away our most successful device yet, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together. Even today, the OnePlus 3T ranks among the best smartphones available with its fluid operating system, powerful hardware, and solid build.”
OnePlus 3T was launched six months ago with marginally better specifications and a beefed up front-facing camera. The company also put an end to the OnePlus 3 a few months back. These changes are obviously being made to make way for the upcoming OnePlus 5. The next flagship is being constantly teased by the company on its social networks. It is expected to come out sometime this Summer with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, a dual-camera setup on the rear and possibly, on the front as well.
It’s a rather weird strategy by OnePlus to discontinue the OnePlus 3T with the introduction of the new flagship. Companies like Apple and Samsung are known to discount the yesteryear’s flagships and keep them on shelves. Does OnePlus fear the 3T sabotaging the OnePlus 5 sales? We can only guess the reason. Assuming the OnePlus 5 would be a premium smartphone, I’m having trouble understanding how OnePlus plans to cater the lower segments which it is gradually leaving for taking on the big guns. Previously, they used to offer price cuts and continue older smartphones.
Update: Interestingly, OnePlus says that the 3T will NOT be discontinued in India and will be sold for the foreseeable future. This is similar to the strategy they adopted for the OnePlus One, the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus 3.
“The OnePlus 3T (both 64GB and 128GB variants) will continue to be available for purchase in India until later this year. OnePlus products and accessories are available through all three official sales channels, including oneplusstore.in, Amazon.in and the OnePlus Experience Store in Bangalore.“, said the company’s spokesperson.
