Iron Throne is in peril once again and this time around it’s not due to the fiery dragons or the Lannister army. Game of Thrones is probably the most popular show of our times and has been a lucrative cash cow for HBO. Currently, the seventh season of the show is being telecasted, and HBO is having a hard time securing the show content. The downside of being the most popular show has been pretty evident in the case of Game of Thrones. Hackers involved in the recent HBO hacks have revealed that a total of 1.5TB data is stolen from the servers and they are going to carry out the “greatest leak of [the] cyber space era.”
That apart only recently the fourth episode of season 7 was leaked from Star India, HBO’s distribution partner in India. Soon after the leak, the link to the low-quality mp4 file was plastered all over the internet including Reddit and even Dropbox links as well. Well, it seems the hackers are back, and this time around they are demanding a ransom of $7Million to stop them by posting the information publicly.
Well, the hackers seem to be a boastful lot as they claimed to have contact numbers of the shows star cast including Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, and Lena Headley. As proof, the hackers have also sent 3.4GB of cache data of other data stolen from HBO. The demands were made via a 5-minute video with the Game of Thrones theme music as the background. Interestingly the hackers have revealed that it took them six months to hack, and thus they need HBO to pay “6-month salary in Bitcoin”, the hacker group further said that they make $12 million to $15 million a year from carrying out blackmail threats.
As per AP, the letter is riddled with misspellings, and it also makes multiple references to the pop culture. The hackers have been given a deadline of three days to transfer the money. However, the letter has not been dated. HBO has employed the services of Mandiant, the company that investigated the infamous Sony hacks in 2014.
