After introducing the Status feature earlier this year, WhatsApp has decided to revamp the Text Status updates. Starting now WhatsApp users can write a text status update against a colored background along with hyperlinking. The colorful status update works similar to the one introduced by Facebook. The update also lets users choose a font, background color and lets you add links as well.
Facebook was testing this feature back in December last year and rolled out the feature in March 2017. WhatsApp has been testing the colorful text update from last month and has rolled it out for everyone. Since Facebook owns WhatsApp, it’s very likely that the latter has borrowed the feature from Facebook. The colored backgrounds along with text and links are expected to boost the user engagement.
In the meanwhile, I personally find the text updates with colored backgrounds to be a bit distracting. On a related note, WhatsApp has also announced Status updates for the WhatsApp on the web. This means that from now onwards WhatsApp Web users will also be able to see the status update.
WhatsApp was earlier ridiculed for having copied the Status update from the Snapchat. However, the status update platform now has 250 million daily users which are way more than the number of users on Snapchat. That apart WhatsApp Business profile was spotted in recent beta builds and is most likely to be included in the future updates.
Simply put, by adding business profiles WhatsApp is expected to generate more revenues. This doesn’t mean that the messaging app will bombard your screen with ads from the brand. The company seems to be more inclined in developing business platforms where consumers can directly converse with the business owners, something that scores of WhatsApp users are already doing in a simpler way.
