Reliance Jio has ushered a new era of wireless connectivity in India and has definitely given the telcos a tough competition. The incumbents, however, didn’t take this lying down and introduced their very own data packs that could counter the Jio’s offer. The last time Jio scored a brownie point was when the company announced a 4G VoLTE device at just Rs 1,500 and also promised a 100 percent cash back upon returning the device after three years of use.
In order to effectively counter JioPhone, Airtel has now launched a proper 4G VoLTE Android device at just Rs 1,399. The telecom operator has tied up with Karbonn Mobiles and has launched the most affordable 4G VoLTE smartphone along with bundled data offers. The device in question is actually a Karbonn A40 and it has been subsidized from the original MRP of Rs 3499.
The Karbonn A40 features a 4-inch touch display and is powered by a SoC clocked at 1.3GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM. The device runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and will be backed by a 1,400mAh battery. On the storage front, the device offers 8GB of internal memory and will further support microSD cards of up to 32GB. Other features include a dual SIM slot, 2-Megapixel rear camera, and a VGA front camera.
How is the Airtel Karbonn A40 Better Than JioPhone?
A quick glance at the spec sheet and the plans days a lot about the Karbonn A40. At least on paper, it seems to be much better offering than the JioPhone since the latter is mostly latched to the Jio ecosystem. I have tried my best to list a few advantages that the Airtel Karbonn A40 has over the JioPhone,
- Unlike JioPhone the Airtel Karbonn A40 supports Google Play store. This will allow buyers to install any Android app of their choice including WhatsApp, Facebook and others.
- The Airtel Karbonn A40 is a full-fledged Android smartphone with a touchscreen. Yes in all likelihood you can use the new device from Airtel like any other entry-level Android phone with no restrictions whatsoever on apps or services that can be accessed. Also, the Karbonn A40 is a no-brainer when it comes to specs.

How much does the Airtel Karbonn A40 end up costing?
Airtel has priced the device in a slightly different manner as opposed to the JioPhone. The upfront cost for buying an Airtel bundled Karbonn A40 is Rs 2,899. The monthly plan costs Rs 169 and offers unlimited calling and 500MB of data every day.
The caveat, however, is that one needs to keep recharging for 18 months and with this, they will get a cashback of Rs 500. The customers are expected to do the same for another 18 months and after this, they will be given another cashback worth Rs 1000. Once the customer uses the phone for 36 months, the ownership will be transferred and there is no need to return the device.
In comparison, JioPhone would provide 300 free SMS per month and no roaming charges. Also, with special recharge of Rs 153 per month, users will be able to get free access to a range of content like JioTV, JioCinema etc. Airtel needs to buckle up and do something about the content part of the deal.
