Amazon has launched a Kindle Lite app for Android in India. The app is less than 2MB in size and still, it manages to pack in the best of features from the Kindle main app. The list of features that make it to the lite version includes Whispersync and free eBook samples with access to regional titles. As part of launch offer, Amazon is giving 80% cashback for the first eBook purchased on the Kindle Lite app via Amazon Pay.
Recently, we have seen a resurgence of “lite” apps, especially in emerging countries like India. These apps try their best to pack in the quintessential and also bring down the computing requirements. This feature is especially useful in entry-level Android phones. Furthermore, the Lite version of the Kindle app will also ensure that it won’t hog up your precious memory space.
The Amazon Kindle Lite app was launched last year as a beta. With this app, the users can read eBooks instantly without waiting for it to download completely. That apart users can still use the core features like the ability to shop for new eBooks, zoom into images, night mode for reading, changing fonts and options to easily navigate through the content. Additionally, the app is optimized to work on slower 2G/3G speeds.
Rajiv Mehta, Country Manager, Kindle was quoted as follows “As part of our continued focus on India, we are always working to improve the reading experience for our customers. Apps constantly compete for space on a mobile phone and Kindle Lite solves this problem for our readers,” he further added that “Kindle Lite is less than 2MB and built to provide a great reading experience even on 2G/3G networks.”
The Kindle Lite app is already available on the Google Play Store and it coexists with the full version of the Kindle app. It is good to see services shed the fat and come with Lite versions of their app. In fact, this is the very premise of Google’s Android Go program. With the sharp increase in internet penetration, it only makes sense to have apps and services that are optimized for entry-level smartphones.
