Apple today introduced the Red Special Edition variants of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Like last year, the phone maker has partnered with Product (RED), an organization that campaigns to fight against HIV and AIDS in Africa. The company will be donating an unspecified amount of the profit from the sales of these models to the charity. The new RED iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus largely resemble last year’s iPhone 7 duo except for one bit (apart from the fact that they’re made out of glass instead of aluminum) — the front is now black instead of white.
There are no price differences between the RED and regular variants. Therefore, the RED iPhone 8 is priced at Rs 67,940 through Apple Authorised Resellers and select carriers. There are two storage options available — 64GB and 256GB. Apple has also introduced a RED Leather Folio case for the iPhone X which costs Rs 7,900 and will be available from the same set of sellers. Sales for all of these new variants will commence sometime in May later this year.
In the United States, the new RED iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will be available for preorders starting tomorrow, April 10th, shipping for which begins Friday that is April 13th. Prices start from $699 for the 64GB iPhone 8 and $799 for the 64GB 8 Plus.
Interestingly, Samsung earlier today made the burgundy color option of the Galaxy S8 (read “not the Galaxy S9) in India as well. Whether that’s a coincidence or not, we don’t know. But it is rather wildering for the company to relaunch yesteryear’s flagship instead of the current one.
Speaking further on the launch, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing, said “This special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone features a stunning red and black color combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus improve on everything we love about iPhone, including Retina HD displays that are more beautiful than ever, the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone with the A11 Bionic and more advanced cameras for unbelievable photos and videos. We are proud to support (RED) with this bold new iPhone and hope customers think it is as special as we do.”
